Mid-February Already! Newsletter and More
Hi Everyone! I just wanted to send out a quick note because today I wrote about behavior modification, including a quick summary of B.F. Skinner's theory, in my newsletter, "My Phone Booth Phase." It is not a newsletter about dog training, but this week I wanted to talk about how we modify behavior in animals and people. It's a free weekly mailer, but you don't have to subscribe to read the article. It's called No Drama Llama. You can find it here: https://myphoneboothphase.substack.com/p/no-drama-llama In other news, some of you asked about the February Challenge. I am going to do a March Challenge, but start it early. I hope to post it later this week. How are you all? What have you been working on and what's ahead for you? I helped a friend at a conformation show again this past weekend and poorly handled a little dog that really didn't want to hang out with me, but it was fun anyway. I also got to see Fetch competition at this AKC show and I'm excited about it! I started training my Whippet immediately and I need to see when he can make his debut. It seems so fun! Have you competed in Fetch? Thanks for being here! Brenna

Kyber is working his way back after his neuter. We're entered in our first competition of the year (CPE agility) at the end of the month. I hope he's ready (physically) and that we're both not too out of practice after so much time off. :-/ Kessel earned her Novice Trick Dog title from DMWYD and a parkour title this week. So that's exciting, too. I haven't competed in Fetch because AKC doesn't want money from intact mixed breed dogs or intact unrecognized purebred dogs. But I did attend a trial our club hosted a few years back and it was pretty fun.

@Brenna Fender Thank you! It's certainly possible another venue might create something similar to Fetch. I know ASCA often offers similar programs to AKC so that could be an option as well!
Multiple Dogs?
How do you manage training multiple dogs? Do you train one and crate the others? Have you trained dogs to do stays or something while the others are training? Or something else? Currently, some of mine are fit-pitchers and I train less because of it.

At home, I have one upstairs and the other dog in the training space downstairs. When we train on the road, everyone is in a crate. I'm starting to try and do a little bit of station work with everyone because Kessel is showing some FOMO signs and we KNOW Kyber is the FOMO King and I think it could help him, too. But we're in the baby stages because Kes does not have anything remotely looking like a stay so she's tethered near a mat.
How's your weekend going?
Are you doing anything doggy this weekend? Training? Trialing? Hiking? Playing? What's going on for you? I've been evaluating runs for being in my new Semi-Private Lessons class over on Clean Run and I'm designing courses for that, but my own dogs only got a good ball playing session today. I'm not sure what tomorrow brings for us. I've been working with these flat rubber targets I just got from Clean Run, plus I very much need to finish one of my Whippet's Intermediate Trick Title. :) Hope you all are well and reasonably warm!

@Brenna Fender He's feeling too well. LOL I forget how much he just moves FAST at all times until he's not supposed to.

@Brenna Fender The vet said 2 weeks and it will be 2 weeks on Friday. Everything looks really good and it's a less invasive surgery because he's male. But still. In a dog who goes as all out as he does, I want to play it very safe and give him that full 2 weeks to recover.

Weekend Weather
I'm sending good thoughts to all of you who are in line for terrible weather this weekend. Hope you all are staying safe! Let us know if you are having bad weather and how you're doing, if you can.

Right now it's just FRIGID. I had a bunch of errands to run today but planning on staying home tomorrow. Expecting subzero overnight lows and then anywhere from 1-1.5 feet of snow Sunday. The snow is par for the course around here. The cold, though. Uck. No thanks. Planning on just some stay-at-home fun with the dogs tomorrow.
