WEEKDAY CHALLENGE: Encoding
Today, I have few words. All I want to see are your ethical hacking skills. ⚠️WARNING⚠️ - Spoilers in the comment section, if I was you I would have my answer prepared to copy/paste before looking at how other people answered this to see the difference in your thinking even with the same right answer. Challenge starts below this line of text. ===== While poking around a deliberately vulnerable machine, you find a hidden file tucked in a forgotten directory. Inside is a single cryptic string, like someone left a clue: aGVsbG93b3JsZDEx Your goal is to: 1. Decode it. What's the plain text hiding underneath, and how did you crack it open? 2. Identify the encoding. What clues (character set, length) told you what type of encoding it is? 3. Explain why it's not a hash, even though it looks random. ===== Goodluck ~ ascriptkiddie

WEEKDAY CHALLENGE: Thermostat Adjuster
This time round I didn't want to give you something too challenging, but I thought we should stretch your coding muscles. Don't forget to post a screenshot of your code passing all 6 tests and explain your thinking. Challenge starts below this line of text. ===== Given the current temperature of a room and a target temperature, return a string indicating how to adjust the room temperature based on these constraints: - Return "heat" if the current temperature is below the target. - Return "cool" if the current temperature is above the target. - Return "hold" if the current temperature is equal to the target. Your code should pass the following tests: 1. adjust_thermostat(68, 72) should return "heat". 2. adjust_thermostat(75, 72) should return "cool". 3. adjust_thermostat(72, 72) should return "hold". 4. adjust_thermostat(-20.5, -10.1) should return "heat". 5. adjust_thermostat(100, 99.9) should return "cool". 6. adjust_thermostat(0.0, 0.0) should return "hold". HERE'S YOUR TERMINAL ===== Goodluck ~ ascriptkiddie

I used a simple if/else statement with this one. If the actual temp is less than the target temp, it returns "heat", if the actual temp is more than the target temp, it returns "cool", and if both the temps match then it returns "hold".
WEEKDAY CHALLENGE: BACK TO HISTORY
For today's challenge I want us to discuss the very first computer virus ever created. ===== Long before ransomware or data breaches existed, the world's first self-replicating program was unleashed on the ARPANET in 1971. 1. What is the name of the first computer virus ever known? 2. How did it actually occur, and why do some argue it wasn't even a true 'virus' by today's standards? ===== Goodluck. ~ From: ascriptkiddie

@Bree Kagwe no I didn’t know about it beforehand. Obviously I know about ARPANET but I didn’t know about this virus.

@Bree Kagwe great one for the pub quiz 🙌
WEEKDAY CHALLENGE: Burger
Thought I'd give you a scavenger hunt, so here's some Open Source Intelligence. Challenge start's below this line of text. ===== “While scrolling on my phone's gallery I found these images when I was in Canada, I remember I had fun that day but I don't remember the place. Can you use your investigation skills to help me remember more details? Notes to consider: - the place should be the exact same branch these images are captured at. - FLAG Format: flag{Latitude,Longitude}. - Use 4 digits after the decimal point. (ex:112.12345 --> 112.1234)” ===== Goodluck. ~ ascriptkiddie

@Bree Kagwe you can say that again 😅🤣
Is Kali Linux necessary?
Hey guys, I'm just wondering if any of you run Kali linux on your personal devices. I am currently running Ubuntu and just manually installing the tools I am aware of like nmap and john. Is there a benefit to using Kali or is it just hype? I heard the Ubuntu/debian is what the majority of the web servers are running on the internet. Also I was reading that RHEL/red hat run most of the enterprise back-end infrastructure. That might also be worth familiarizing myself with in future.

@Zae Miller yeah my old laptop had 12gb and it felt a bit clunky using 2 VMs on that even with giving the Kali VM 4gb. I think you need 16gb as a minimum to do it comfortably. Look up DVWA (Damn Vulnerable Web App) that’s a good one for webs apps if you want to get into bug bounty’s etc

@Bree Kagwe honestly the only things I’ve had trouble with are all user error 🤣 then once I learnt how it worked it was fine. If you game a lot then I’d dual boot Windows and just have the Windows drive for your games. But apart from that you can do everything and more on Linux 😁
