UCA Update 9th February
Hello everyone, I’m going to try and share a quick update like this once per week, so you can see what’s happening inside the Academy (when there’s something worth reporting). Over the last week I’ve been building and updating a couple of courses: - New course for beginners: a full starter course for creators who are just getting going - choosing a camera, super basic settings, and a simple setup workflow. - Big DaVinci Resolve course updates: - 30+ new lessons added to the Colour Editing section - 10 new lessons added on Fusion (titling + transitions) - A quick note on where the Resolve course is at: - The Academy is still in Early Access, and it’ll stay that way until the Resolve course is complete (the structure and written lessons are being built now, and I’ll add the video lessons once the entire academy is built). - If Skool allows it, I’ll honour the Early Access price for life for current premium members. You’ll also notice some of the new Resolve lessons are marked with **. That just means they’re not 100% polished yet, they might be missing a small piece, or a detail needs fine-tuning to match Resolve perfectly. I’ll be tightening those up as I add the screenshots. There’s already plenty to learn in the new content, and I’m excited to keep building this with you. See you in the Academy, Jake

Creating proxies - failing dismally!!!
Hi Jake, I’m running through the Da Vinci resolve course which is absolutely damn awesome by the way (almost Jackie-proof but not quite!) I’ve got to the creating proxies bit (which I so wished I’d know about earlier) I’ve imported the media and I have right clicked to create proxy and it does its thing all OK. But once I select ‘prefer proxy’ I immediately get a media off-line error however if I go back to prefer originals everything’s fine. Nowhere in the proxies step did it give me the option to say where they would be saved so when I go to re-connect proxy I don’t know where to look. I’m sure this is a Jackie problem and the rest of the planet knows what they’re doing but I’ve gone back to the beginning of the lesson multiple times and I still don’t understand what I’m doing wrong. Thanks.

Interesting! Proxies should be stored locally so not 100% sure why that’s showing up. In the media pool on your clip that’s had the proxy made can you right click and click something like show in finder/show in files. And see if it finds the source destination? I’ll have a look into this tomorrow and see if I can figure out why it’s happening!

Hi Jackie, i've had a look into it and added in some additional information into the course, but I'll paste the info here: Additional Information - I generated proxies but they are showing as media offline FIX This is an interesting situation as when you generate proxies it should automatically add in the relevant file path. To figure out where your proxies are being saved follow these steps in your project: Project Settings (Small cog in the bottom right) -> Master Settings -> Scroll to working folders -> Look at Proxy Generation Location - this will show you the file path (You can then click browse to open the folder) Option 1 - Delete the proxies you generated and re-generate them in DaVinci Option 2 - On the clip in your media pool, right click, go into the proxy option and click relink proxy media, then go find the original clip
Use of blue light - night dive
I am fascinated by bioluminescence so, when I purchased my new dive light I chose one capable of emitting blue light (Dive Lantern V7000) - I have only used it once (and I do not have a yellow filter) but the GoPro11 footage was completely blown out even though it looked OK on the back screen. My question - I have my GoPro settings as per recommended in the Action camera course - should I make changes for night with blue light or am I doing something wrong with the way the light is set. Thanks

Hey Jackie! Shooting at night always poses a unique challenge! Would you be able to share your settings and do you have any photos/screenshots of the blown out scene?

Awesome! For night dives you’ll definitely want to increase up the limit from 400, as it’ll be too dark. I’d slowly up it from 400 and compare the noise until you find a good balance!
*Update* DaVinci Resolve for Ocean Creators
I've made some updates to the DaVinci Resolve course over the past few days. I'm working through the colour workflow (its a big one and theres a lot to cover) - due to the amount of work that needs to go into it I took a break and finished up the EXPORTING part of the course. Now you can export in the right quality for the right platform. As an additional bonus theres 2 new downloadables for Resolve in the Resource Vault: 1. The UCA Pre-made Project - A blank canvas with a pre-made organisational structure and pre-made timelines set up so you can jump in straight away. 2. Export Presets - Theres so many different options and settings when exporting through DaVinci Resolve, so i've made it simple. Download and import the presets to get cinematic exports, as well as my custom built bulk export for reels (vertical clips), which exports all of the individual clips as individuals instead of one large clip. This is just the start - much more to come. Comment if theres anything you specifically want to see in this course. Jake

Hey Jackie! I’ve never forgot! Every time I saw your name pop up I remembered! Absolutely! That’s already in there. This is probably 30x more in depth than the Action Camera one and covers everything. It goes from downloading DaVinci all the way through to exporting. In fact today I just released a project you can download that sets you up. All you have to do is drag in clips and edit. Then with the export presets you can easily export!
