The #1 Mistake I See Business Owners Make With Their Finances
Using a personal card for everything. I get it. When you're first starting out, it's easy to swipe the same card for a client lunch, office supplies, and groceries. But that convenience can create a lot of confusion later. Here's the problem: if the IRS ever questions a deduction, "I'm pretty sure that was for the business" isn't proof. You need records that clearly separate business expenses from personal spending. A few signs this might be you: You're still running the business out of your first personal checking account. You don't have a dedicated business credit card or bank account. Tax season means digging through statements trying to remember what was business and what wasn't. Your bookkeeping feels more like detective work than recordkeeping. The fix doesn't have to be complicated โ€” it just takes a little structure. Opening a separate business bank account and using a dedicated business card can make bookkeeping easier, help you understand your numbers, and create a cleaner paper trail if questions ever arise. Let's talk about it. Are your business and personal finances completely separate, or is this an area you're still working on?

Welcome to The Owner's Money Table
I'm Hope, a CPA with more than 25 years of experience helping business owners get clear on their numbers and confident in their decisions. I created this community for business owners who want practical financial insight without the overwhelm. Here, we'll have real conversations about cash flow, profitability, taxes, financial reports, business growth, and the everyday money questions that come with running a business. No judgment. No jargon. Just honest conversations about money and business. To get started, introduce yourself: โ€ข Your name and business โ€ข Where you're located โ€ข One financial question you'd love answered โ€ข One business goal you're working toward this year I'll be sharing resources, tools, and guidance based on the questions that come up in the community, so the more you share, the more valuable this space becomes for everyone. Pull up a chair, introduce yourself, and join the conversation. I'm glad you're here.
