Difference Between Local & Ivy lab internships?
Hello, I have a quick question about how local university/IVY-league college labs differ. When I got into high school and was new to everything, juniors & seniors of the hs gave us a "research seminar" to provide advice about finding a passion and career in research. Not to make fun of the seminar itself or anything, but there were a lot of disagreement between the seniors during the presentation😅; one of the seniors had an internship in a Harvard biochem lab and said that her lab was the best, while others were in local community college labs and tried to convince us that they had more resources. Of course, I am trying to reach out to every professor possible, but this just led me to wonder if there is a better option? My research teacher even said that the lab's university name doesn't really matter, but is this just to make the other students feel better? I'm currently considering reseach project topics in oncology and biochemistry. Although I haven't settled on a specific project/solid idea yet, I've been reading more papers from a professor I'm planning to cold email. Should I refrain from reaching out to these professors if I don't have a novel project of my own? Thank you all for your help! :)

@Finance Main Thanks for your comment! I was pretty stressed out that I would have to reach out to top university professors in order to be recognized, and I definitely think that you cleared that up.

@Jadon Subbu Thanks for confirming it! But then does that mean that I have less chance landing a internship in an actual lab, like the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, then to land an opportunity at a community college? Since the professors are already reknowned and in high positions already?
Online Research Programs
Hey, I just discovered that such things as online research programs exist so I have a couple of questions in my head: 1. Can you apply to a research program without having any specific knowledge in depth, and if so, are those research programs common? 2. Following Rishab's video, once you decide on what topic you want to do research on, you are supposed to find a professor that is doing a similar research and cold email them to ask them if I could join their research process. How do you find these professors and how do you know what researches they are doing/ preparing for? 3. I am an international student and a non-us citizen, so local research programs in labs/universities or online ones that require for one to be a us citizen do not satisfy my needs. Can you recommend some free virtual research opportunities and I would be really grateful if you help me on how to search for research programs online that fit me. Thanks you!

@Syeda Zainab Fatima I slightly disagree... I am completely with you that everybody needs to do independent research, but I think it's more important to gain external help and an 'introduction' to what the science community is like before conducting your own research. This is why so many people sign up for paid summer programs, although they all know that it won't help your college resume. But yes, indep research is one of the key factors! Just wanted to point it out because I regret just brushing off research programs when I was starting research!

@Syeda Zainab Fatima Yes, Rishab is a great example but I think that it's hard to start off an independent project on your own, especially if you are under international setting or if you have other focuses. Taking the initiative by exploring your interestes through paid programs is always portrayed as a bad thing, but I just wanted to point out that it's not true at all. Maybe you only focus on research and have a lot of time, but I know people who are exceling in music or other ec's and also doing research by commiting to programs rather than self-guided projects. This is not merely based on me, but thousands of other students. I didn't try to make you feel targetted, no need to take my comment that offensively-

Hey, this isn't paid content and I unfortunately don't have those accounts either 😅but I got some study guides online for free. Please check these out; I think that they might be of some use for you! - CliffsNotes (Great for short summaries): https://www.cliffsnotes.com/literature - Shmoop: https://www.shmoop.com/literature/ - Novelguide (Only has classics):https://novelguide.com/#google_vignette - eNotes (Not entirely free, but free guides are provided and they're pretty good!):https://www.enotes.com/topics?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjww5u2BhDeARIsALBuLnMFEJ4JYY83Rqu5jfeXFCgRBybrA9xNeplglRQxiyH2YrObtgJvz9gaAoLFEALw_wcB

AI Tool For Mind Mapping
Hi all, I am looking to create mind maps as part of my research project, but that can be time consuming, so are there any recommended AI tools to help do this efficiently?

Hey, I would suggest Whimsical AI. You do need to sign up but I think that it's definitely worth it. There is a premium version but the completely free version has enough functions. The free version has a limit of 100 AI actions, meaning that you can use the AI tool to generate you prompts up to 100 times in total, so be aware before using it. Basically what you need to do: 1. get a board open 2. Press "M" for mindmap 3. Write your pompt/main idea 4. Press ctrl+. for AI to generate you explanations on that prompt Hope this helps!
