Take it from a midwife...
Birth isn’t something you conquer. It’s something you surrender into. One of the most powerful moments in labour is a phase called transition. It's the moment where your nervous system taps out. Where every part of you yells "I can’t do this anymore". Which is kind of true. THAT version of you can’t. Because the version of you that tries to stay in control? She doesn’t make it through transition and the reason is this: Birth doesn’t respond to force. It responds to surrender. Learning to surrender during birth (any type of birth!) is what allows the present version of you to give way to a stronger, wiser, and more powerful version of you. One you might not have noticed before, but she's been there a long time. Waiting for her chance to surface. And she's in there, trust me! I've seen these versions of women emerge during birth hundreds and hundreds of times over. It's probably the entire reason that I have been doing this for more than 17 years. The Power of Surrender is just 1 of 10 modules inside Aligned Birth - a program I personally wrote to prepare you for the parts of birth you can’t rehearse. In it, we explore how resistance (physical, emotional, mental) can actually make birth harder… and how learning to surrender can unlock an inner strength that many women wrongly assume they don't possess. This work is about: • stopping the fight with your body • understanding how resistance amplifies pain • learning how to yield instead of shut down • staying regulated when things go sideways For a very short time, I am offering to personally coach you through The Power of Surrender and help you apply it to your birth: your fears, your control patterns, your nervous system. Not a course. Not more breathing techniques and mindfulness. Actual mindset coaching. For a puny NZ$49. If surrender scares you, good. That’s usually where the work is. Comment SURRENDER to step in. Birth Was Never Intended to Break You.
You are not your circumstances. Not your diagnosis. Not your fear. Not the story you’ve been told about how birth *might* go. Pregnancy has a brutal way of shrinking people: one scan. One comment. One scary statistic and suddenly your whole identity is reduced to risk, outcomes, and “what if.” All of this can leave you feeling more like a clinical liability than a mother who is giving birth to her child. But here’s the truth no one says loudly enough: Circumstances are external. Capacity, strength and resilience - our ability to birth our babies, however we choose to do it - that's internal. A positive birth experience doesn’t come from perfect circumstances (Trust me. I've done hundreds of them). It comes from knowing who you are *beneath* the noise. Because when pregnancy, labour, or birth strip everything back, what remains is not your fear. It's your courage. "But what if..." your capacity was no longer defined by how calm you feel right now. Or by what number baby this is for you. Or by past trauma, the opinions or expectations of other people, or (least of all!) the predictions of a medical system? "What if..." your capacity was defined by things that are far more powerful? Your ability to adapt. Your willingness to face intensity. Your intuition. The deep, ancient intelligence of your body - the very same that is knitting your baby together one human cell at a time. "What if..." the thing that defined your birth experience was your ability to stay aligned with what really matters to you?? Birth doesn’t ask you to be fearless. It asks you to be present. To tune in. To adapt. When you understand that you are bigger than your circumstances, fear stops running the show. Anxiety LOSES IT'S AUTHORITY. You stop outsourcing your power to worst-case scenarios and start trusting the part of you that has always known how to move through challenge. Inside you is something more timeless than fear. Stronger than uncertainty. Wiser than the stories looping in your mind.

Birth Was Never Intended to Break You.
Absolutely Everything In Our Bodies Is Tension & Release
Breathing. Circulation. Digestion. Hormonal balance. Reproduction. Pregnancy. Childbirth. Fear and anxiety are no different. We can live in the tension of these things or we can navigate out of them, into release. Growth. Freedom. They are not personal failures or signs that something is wrong. They are physiological states — patterns of tension that live in the body and are asking to be acknowledged. Like every other process in the body, fear and anxiety are designed to move. Yet so many of us are taught to brace. To resist. To tense up in the face of uncertainty. To ignore fear rather than understand it. In birth, as in life, prolonged tension without release creates suffering. But when we learn how to recognise tension, work with it, and consciously move toward release, something profound happens. The body softens. The nervous system settles. Capacity expands. What once felt overwhelming becomes workable. This is what the Head Trash Clearance technique offers in pregnancy. Not positive thinking, mindfulness or more breathing techniques (although by all means, use these if they help!) but a simple and effective method for regulation, surrender, and trust. Birth asks us to open into intensity rather than fight it. To ride waves instead of resisting them. To let go, again and again. The powerful thing about birth is, it doesn't just result in the arrival of your baby! It results in the arrival of a whole new approach to parenting, relationships, stress...fears and anxieties that exist outside the birthing room. No matter how planned, or unplanned your baby's mode of birth is. There is growth on the other side of release. There is freedom on the other side of fear. Your body already knows how to get there and Aligned Birth exists to help you remember that.
