More about Balintawak Eskrima
Balintawak Eskrima or Balintawak Arnis is a Filipino martial art created by Great Grandmaster Venancio "Anciong" Bacon in the 1950s to enhance and preserve the combative nature of eskrima which he felt was being watered down by other styles of Filipino martial arts. It is named after a small street in Cebu where it was founded. Balintawak is commonly identified by it’s use of the single stick and close quarter range of play, it is designed to develop combat attributes: speed, timing, reflexes and proper distance control. Additionally, emphasis is placed on economy of motion, use of the left hand, traps, ruses, and tactics of delivery to produce well-timed and accurate attacks and counter attacks. ⚔️ What is your experience with FMA or Balintawak Eskrima?

@Donn Vergara This one is great. I've seen this some time ago. I will have to rewatch it.

@James Runyon that’s excellent. It’s great for multiple reasons. I think the best reason is hand eye coordination. There are skill sets, not only work for the stick but knife and empty hand. More importantly for gym owners it’s a great way to add in supplemental curriculum or black boat club curriculum.

Did you train this weekend?
BJJ and Balintawak were part of my training regimen this weekend. Always trying to maintain basic training for fitness and mental stimulation. What type of training did you do this weekend?

@Richard Martin footwork drills will kill the calves. Especially if you’re not doing them regularly. I used to absolutely love doing them, but if I do them nowadays, I will be in pain.

@Richard Martin lol, i’m not laughing at you. I’m laughing with you. Yes we’re getting old. The body doesn’t react the same way and for contact sports pads are gonna definitely be a good thing to preserve our bodies. 🙌🏽
Live Balintawak class this past Thursday.
We had a live Balintawak class this past Thursday. We will try to schedule a free live class next month on self-defense most likely on a Saturday.
2026
How is everyones year starting off? So far mine has ups and downs. Work is extra busy. Started stretching again after the holidays, which I took off from a knee injury (and its still lingering), so I feel like I’m starting over. Yesterday, I started back at our tkd black belt training class, and enjoyed it. It seems we will start incorporating more judo techniques this year. This morning I went to a bjj open mat and managed to tap a black belt; the first time Ive managed it since starting back in bjj about 8 months ago.

Hey there, @Richard Martin, it’s been a slow start for me to be honest. But I am back on track with all cylinders moving. I would like to offer a free Balintawak class this Thursday if folks are interested. And I will be expanding the content pretty soon over the next week. How has your 2026 started and what is something you would like to work on in regards to martial arts?

@Richard Martin you’re not lying there a spider guard is pretty awesome. And those who have long legs can utilize those triangles are really fast. Also arm bars and omoplatas. It’s very popular for TKD folks to gravitate to spider guard or anything that is heavy use of using their legs.
