Story Spark & Quick W.R.I.T.E. Story
I a local writers group they often share prompts and when I can I like to have a go at writing whatever it sparks for ten minutes maximum. Today's spark was to write either a poem or piece of flash fiction or observation that included something that was fractured or broken in some way. If you feel you'd like to have a go at the ten minute prompt too, feel free! If you'd like to share I'd love to read how you interpret it. Remember, no editing, just see where the writing takes you, it may be a surprise! This is what I came up with. I think I'll be using the character to develop a longer short story in the future. I keep a Google Doc of all my pieces inspired by prompts which I turn to for inspiration when The Muse has a day off... "There’s a fracture across the glass in the hand mirror, I see it as I turn it over on its dressing table stiff cotton mat. Dust rising as I do so. How had I not noticed it before? But then why would I even remember, it’s been thirteen years since I last sat on this pink velour topped stool before I needed to be cared for. I catch a movement out of the corner of my eye. The spider is evidently disturbed by my arrival into what has become her domaine, where once it was mine. I look into the mirror and see the fractured glass break my own face into even more fractious angles than it already is. Time and pain has left me riven with deep lines and furrows. I close my eyes and make a wish, just one more image of who I used to be with you, I ask. Opening them again, the cracked glass is unbroken and the smooth face of the young women - freshly joined up to the RAF in 1940 - smiles back at me. I smile too now, comforted that when the time comes she’ll be waiting to guide me home."

@Georgiana D Thanks for the tag, Georgiana! Here's my piece of fiction about being broken... My grandmother always said stories were warnings dressed as lullabies. Her favourite was of Goddess Akhilandeshvari. A mouthful in Sanskrit, but soft when Paati said it. The Goddess of Broken Things. “The Never Not Broken,” she would whisper with a twinkle. She told me the Goddess wasn’t fragile. She shattered on purpose, over and over, remaking herself each time. Brokenness wasn’t weakness; it was fire. It tore through stale habits and toxic routines and left only what could survive the flames. “In the cracks is where the light slips in.” Paati would say. I used to laugh, telling her I’d rather stay whole. I never thought the story would belong to me.
Hello & an explanation - it's been quiet in here...
Hello everyone. I just wanted to pop in and let you know that things will be returning to their usual rhythm this week, now I'm back from focusing on some unplanned family things, and also having been interviewed for a podcast and speaking at an author event in London last weekend. It can be a challenge sometimes, juggling it all, can't it, when events collide? Thank you for understanding 💛 How has your writing and creating been going? If you'd like some writing company to help get you back on or keep you on track, don't forget we have a co-writing session today- details in the calendar and a direct link at the top of the discussion threads here. It's definitely great for me to know that 'golden hour' is reserved so I can honour my writerly side. I'll have my cup of comforting fruit tea on hand, and probably some biscuits too. I hope to see some of you on the co-writing call.

Mine would be to make a fictional character fall in love with me. Very on theme for a romance writer. But then again, for a high-energy, alpha woman, I don't think an alpha man would suit me! 😆

Hey, everyone. I’m Gauri Prasad. A debut author and Canadian actor. My winter release, The Never Not Broken, is a spicy romantic suspense with enough drama to make my poor husband wonder if I’m writing or just plotting against him. :) Since I've met Tracy, I’ve been juggling my debut and sneaking exclusive chapters introducing the characters of my novel to the world. Through His Malachites is now available on my Substack and also by subscription to my newsletter. Apparently, one book at a time is far too reasonable for me! I write ambitious anti-heroines who are smart, sensual, and slightly unhinged (representation matters, right?). You can find me on Instagram _gauriprasad_ where I share equal parts book updates and chaos. Book rec? Hmmm.... Right now, I’ll press Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros into your hands for its addictive Romantasy world-building and the kind of prose you can inhale like popcorn. ☕ My beverage of choice is chai made on a stovetop (the only correct way, don’t fight me on this), and 🍰 gluten-free strawberry shortcake is basically my love language. Excited to be here. Please distract me from my edits!

@Wesley Penner Hi Wesley, it's nice to chat with you too. That's the great thing about Tracy, she's amazing at connecting people. I'm with you on your chocolate choices. I turn into a Venus chocolate-trap of sorts around the treat. If you're ever in Toronto, please don't hesitate to ping me, and I can suggest the best places for black coffee and chocolate in the city. To answer your question, the most productive tool is a mindset that our work should also have a component of structure to it and that creatives need a routine too! What about you? What keeps you productive? P.s. Was it too early to say I'm a Torontonian? :) I hope you're enjoying the rest of the summer.
