You use the Pomodoro technique the wrong way... Here is how it should be done
Most people use the Pomodoro technique the wrong way. And no… it’s not just: “Work 25 minutes, rest 5 minutes.” Pomodoro is FLEXIBLE. You can do: - 13 minutes work / 2 minutes break - 25 / 5 - 50 / 10 The goal is simple:focus deeply for a short period…then take a REAL break. Personally, I don’t recommend going much longer than 50 minutes without a short break. And after around 2 hours of hard mental focus, your brain usually needs a bigger break:around 20–30 minutes. But here’s the biggest mistake people make: They destroy their focus during the break. They open: - TikTok - Instagram - YouTube Shorts - messages - random scrolling So the brain fully disconnects from the task. Then people wonder why it feels hard to focus again. A GOOD Pomodoro break should help your brain RESET and stay connected to the work. During the break: - practice deep breathing or cardiac coherence, - review what you just accomplished, - prepare your brain for the next session: Ask yourself questions like: “What did I finish during the last work session?” “What did I learn?” “What is the MOST important thing I want to accomplish in the next session?” This keeps your brain in active learning mode instead of distraction mode. And something interesting starts happening after a few good Pomodoro cycles: At first, your brain wants to escape the work. It says:“Check your phone.”“Go scroll.”“Do something easier.” But after enough focused sessions and intentional breaks… your brain starts saying the opposite: “Wait… don’t stop now, don't take a break suddenly!” And you actually WANT to continue working. That’s when you know the system is working. Because now you trained your brain to enjoy focus…instead of enjoying distraction. That’s the real power of Pomodoro.
