Concepts and Principles
I sent this directly to V and Fritz but I’m gonna post it in here to support this medium. Alright question I was thinking about yesterday while watching a Gordon instructional: How do I approach learning the rules for positions? I’m just gonna kind of ramble and hopefully you all get what I’m saying but I know general concepts (attacking the upper can expose the lower and vice versa, turn your face away from a rear naked, you want your leg side leg over the head side leg in 3/4 juji) but like how do I learn the overarching principles/concepts to know these things without being explicitly told? For example, Gordon was talking about Darces and being on bottom you wanna turn your face slightly into the choke to avoid them gaining access to your jaw line to basically can opener you for the choke. I was surprised because I was thinking well that’s the opposite of the RNC, is this because you’re facing the opposite direction and the choke’s going in backwards? Then you get into ecological stuff with topics of centerline, and how there’s certain things for yourself you want in your centerline and things you don’t want, but you also want your opponents limbs to be in your centerline for armbars and such. Do you all see where I’m at, and have any suggestions?

From Anthony: To be honest I don’t think in hyper specifics if we’re referring to how the Kingsway guys teach grappling. I’ve really minimized how much I need to know specifically in each position to prevent paralysis from analysis. I’ll still analyze, but just enough to support my concepts and themes. For a choke, I don’t think about anything other than addressing their connection and keeping both of my carotid’s open/trachea open to allow me to continue. As far as “turn this way/turn that way” I found that information got absorbed some years ago r/t subconscious learning during rounds. The eco stuff is legit in regards to our bodies self organizing if repetition is occurring. However, you must be consciously thinking “why did this not work?” And advance to trying something else. I know it’s the cheap answer, but this has really expedited my results. Obviously touch base w/ Adam on this one since he knows your learning style. However, I recommend sticking to mainly watching high level grappling and then only picking up an instructional after you have messed with a position long enough to be familiar with the in’s and out’s of said position. That’s my two cents. What has helped me more than anything is mat time, and being present for those rounds, always focusing on whatever the next task is.

From Adam: So Sean put it in a way I like: principles are things that are always present (weight distribution, leverage, base, etc) while concepts are things we apply (upper body vs lower body, rotational control, etc). So learning rules for positions just depends on what we're trying to ask. There's things that can apply to multiple positions, but it's hard to say that it'll be the same answer. Likewise, I know thats open ended, but until we get into specifics it's an open ended answer.
Goomey Intro
Howdy! My names Gabriel, everyone calls me Goomey (it’s my last name). I’m 25 years old and a white belt. I started training about three years ago at 10p Richmond AFS under Scott Elliot, but Adam was primarily who I received instruction from. I trained Tuesday/Thursday and occasional open mats while I was working full time hours, flight training, college, and managing everything else life entails. Once I became a flight instructor, I took a year off to focus on my career, then Adam announced he was opening 10p Berea and it happened to be the perfect time for me to get back into training. Paid for my year, and the rest has been history. I don’t get to train as often as I wish I could, but it makes it that much better when I can. I’ve since moved on from being a flight instructor to flying Falcons for a private investment firm. Biggest perk is training across the US at different 10p’s. Pleasure to be here! Favorite submission: RNC Favorite Position: The back 😂 Work In Progress: Everything (but focused on front headlock defense/counter offensive work, outside/inside passing, and upper body/lower body dilemmas from standing and open guard)
