Stop Entertaining Your Kids
One sentence from this week's conversation with Pat Barber keeps echoing in my head: The goal isn't to make life easier for your children. The goal is to make your children more capable. That changes everything. Instead of doing it for them... Invite them into it. Let them cook. Let them build. Let them carry. Let them fail. Let them try again. The project might take twice as long. You'll probably have to bite your tongue. But years from now, they won't remember that Dad finished the project quickly. They'll remember that Dad believed they were capable enough to help. That's how confidence is built. Not by telling a child they're amazing. By giving them something meaningful to become amazing at. You can listen to this Pre-Patriarch conversation with Pat Barber here. Reflection This week, where are you making life easier... ...when you could be making your child more capable? What's one real responsibility you're going to hand over this week? Not because they'll do it perfectly— but because that's how they'll learn. 👇 Share one thing you're committing to this week.

Working out with them. They love it and I could do it far more, even if only a few minutes.

@Robert Bill Jr As much as I love my girls, I gotta admit I do envy the opportunity to raise little men. Coming from an all-boy family, it's more of a challenge for me to play with girls than it is for me to connect with boys in play. Just the idea of a boy with a sling lights me up -- and I'm learning to play with my girls in a better way. As they've gotten older, it's gotten easier for me for sure.
Field Note 001 // Choose the Better Part
As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed — or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” -- Luke 10:38–42 (NIV) How often do we do this? We rush from one responsibility to the next. Crossing off the list. Solving problems. Fixing. Providing. All the while, life is sitting right in front of us. Your son asking the same question for the hundredth time. Your daughter wanting you to watch one more spin. Your wife hoping you'll put your phone down and simply stay with her for a minute. Maybe Jesus wasn't just speaking to Martha. Maybe He was speaking to every husband and father who gets lost in the forest of life and misses the trees in front of him. Reflection Where have you been so busy serving your family that you've forgotten to simply be with them? Practice Give your wife or one of your children ten uninterrupted minutes today. No phone. No agenda. Just your attention. Report back. // Face your demons. x Rob

In reflecting on things like this, I always feel conviction...because I'm driven by goals and my ever-growing task list, and it doesn't matter how much I "accomplish"...my weakness is to push for more. I need regular reminders that my family needs my focused attention as much as they require my leadership and provision. It helps me to promise things to the kids early in the day so I have greater accountability to making it happen, so I've just done that and will report back. Thanks for this reminder @Robert Bill Jr
Welcome to Patriarch.
You found the room. This is where the men who registered for the Patriarch Summit — September 11-13, 2026 — gather before, during, and after the weekend. Connect with the men you'll be in the room with. Introduce yourself below. Tell us your name, where you're from, and one thing you're showing up to reclaim. You'll see this space come alive in August, leading up to the summit, to ensure you're fit for the work we're about to do. Your first move: Drop a comment below. Name. Location. One thing you're here to reclaim. That's it. The standard starts now. // Set the standard x Rob
