Happy Memorial Day Weekend
Friday, May 23rd, 2025 @ 1:30 PM It's a gorgeous day on Mammoth Mountain and across the Eastern Sierra. The weather looks great with warmer days this week, right through the big Memorial Day Weekend. This weekend is the traditional kick-off to Summer in the Eastern Sierra. There will be many activities and events to participate in, along with Skiing and Snowboarding at Mammoth Mountain. >>>Snow Conditions: Spring skiing and riding continues with firm snow at 7:30 AM, with the corn popping out between 8:30 and 9:30 AM. The moguls in West Bowl are nice a soft by 11 AM. Local's Choice: Early morning, firm groomer laps via Saddle Bowl to Forest Trail to the Stump Alley Express and then back to the top of 3 again. As the day warms up, a glide down World Cup into St Antone can't be beat when they drop the race ropes around 11 AM. If you like a nice big bump line, the moguls in West Bowl are tight and deep from the local bashers. Up Top Cornice is fun as it softens up by mid-morning. Scotties is also groomed and gets less traffic, so the snow stays longer on that side. However to access Scotties you should take upper Road Runner as condtions on skyline suck right now. The Drop Outs and Wipe Out are all good, as are Climax and the Sign Line. >>> If you’re coming to ski and snowboard the remainder of this season, please remember that all winter operations are now out of Main Lodge and the Mill. Weekday Lifts are (weather permitting) chairs 1, 2, 3, 6, 11, 23, and G1 and G2 from 7:30 to 2 PM. The Unbound Express (6) is open from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM. Chairs 4, 5, and 10 are running on weekends and this Memorial Day. Starting May 27th, expect chairs 1, 3, 23, and G1 and G2. Chair 2 will run as long as they can keep access to the Mill going, I'm hearing. There is no word on a closing day yet, so the lifts will run into June. How long is anyone's guess. Two comments, Steve: First, while chatting with a Mammoth employee on a lift this past Wednesday, I was told that closing date has now been set as June 8th. Second, Mammoth Mountain needs to update the way they inform skiers of safety issues. While going up 23 yesterday, we noticed that Scotty's was looking really nice, and decided to head there instead of Cornice. After bearing right at the top of the chair and starting down Skyline, we encountered the first sign telling us that Skyline was closed due to it's condition. However, it was only partially roped off, providing, I assume, access to go down part way to get to the Wipeout chutes. Feeling stuck, we ended up taking Skyline all the way to Scotty's, dodging the bad conditions. Instead of leaving the hard fast snow warnings up long after the spring snow has softened up top, wouldn't it have been nice to install a sign at the top of 23 exit cover, stating, simply, Access to Scotty's by upper roadrunner only", along with a left arrow?
Drop 18
Anyone know if the 18 in “Drop 18” has any meaning? I was thinking maybe it was a shot placement number, though I don’t really know if shot placements are actually numbered. Cheers 🤙🏼

@Steve Taylor "weekends and holidays": what's that?? 🤣 Seriously, though, with chairs two and 10 acting as a hub, and how chair two seems to always be the most crowded, it seems like chair two would have been the better candidate for upgrading to a higher speed 6 passenger lift, rather than chair one.

@Steve Taylor I know Chair 1 needed replacement badly (delayed 5 years, right?); I'm speaking strictly about where the bottleneck occurs, and Chair 2 can even get crowded on non-holiday midweek days, where you walk right onto Chair 1.

While I have several great ones, the moment that's etched in my mind happened about 6 years ago on Slot, Chair 9. I was spring skiing on very fast, good snow, and I turned right off Gold Hill onto Slot; the run itself isn't really visible until I skied to the left and over a mound, where most of the very narrow run first does become visible. That's when I first saw a snowmobile coming straight up the run toward me as I was speeding down 🫨. He saw me, I saw him and we both began mirroring evasive maneuvers, which still left us on a collision course... Finally, I went right and he went right, and he missed me by about a foot. Turned out he was a substitute maintenance guy who was supposed to be coming up a different way to clear some obstacles and found himself on Slot by accident! I had so much adrenaline for the rest of the morning that I skied better than I had for the entire season... I complained about this to lift maintenance, and they asked me if I wanted a free lift ticket as compensation for being scared s***less; I already had a season pass, so I declined 🤔

Hi, I'm Fred Baron, I'm a skier, and I have been a member of the Mammoth Mountain Snowman Facebook group for several years. I'm from San Diego, I'm a retired architect, and I average over 30 midweek days of skiing at Mammoth every season, taking about eight car trips there each season, sometimes with friends, and sometimes solo. At age 76, I'm a little old for bumps and double diamonds, but I ski pretty much everything else. My favorite run is dry Creek off chair 5 (or 3), in either fresh powder or after a rare grooming. My summers are spent bodyboarding at North county San Diego beaches. The photo was taken a few years back by Jim Goodrich, a Mammoth ski instructor I became friends with as a direct result of joining the Snowman group.
