I have a question about the concept of “vertical integration” mentioned during the session. As I understood it, a habit is often not simply eliminated but replaced with another habit, and this principle can work in both positive and negative ways. I experience this with salah. When I pray regularly, I feel morally better, spiritually peaceful, and more patient. It becomes easier for me to understand others and respond without being harsh. However, I have also met people who worship frequently and possess considerable religious knowledge, yet they seem extremely angry, judgmental, or harsh toward others. Growing up in Pakistan, I often heard people justify this by saying, “When someone worships too much, they naturally become short tempered.” But this has never made sense to me. If sincere worship is supposed to purify the soul and improve a person’s character, why does it appear to have the opposite effect on some people? How does this relate to the concept of vertical integration? What might be missing or going wrong in their worship, and is there any valid Islamic basis for claiming that excessive worship causes anger?
