New year, new pest deterrents
Sooo … something’s been eating my baby snap peas seedlings 🌱 and I think it’s a πŸ€. I’m determined to not use traps or poison β€” and I think I found a simple solution. Whaddya think?? Bamboo skewers poked into the soil at odd angles (like those roof spikes for pigeons) surrounding the shoots. Fingers crossed this works. Skewers are easy. πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌπŸš«πŸ€ Have you had this or similar issues? How’d you handle it?

@Dennis Wichter it’s a rat. I’ve said it from beginning. We’re in a close-walled neighborhood and I never see rabbits in here. A rat nibbled at the tomatoes last year in same bed and now it’s the sweet pea vine sprouts. We see one run along the wall every so often at night. It’s the only logical answer. And yes, it’s gross!!

Has anyone ever (heard of or) tried this plant as a way to keep rodents and snakes away? It’s called a panadol plant. What was your experience with it?? https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cki4lokgm6K/?igsh=MTFuNDNkd2ZyMzBnaw==

Q: What does meditation and living soil have in common? A: OM πŸ˜‚πŸ’š organic matter and organic matters! πŸ’šπŸ˜‚ I’m adding OM by hand β€” and om’ing while doing it β€” to our Kurapia ground cover. We planted plugs late last summer and then over winter it was dormant and the soil settled. A healthy layer of OM/compost will feed the soil, the Kurapia that’s waking up, and help level up the soil in low spots. By the end of summer, I’m expecting to see a fully green and covered area with no bare spots. Three cheers for OM!!! Pics show the island of Kurapia that’s being filled in w dark, rich compost; the bag of LVWF compost; and a pic of a full-coverage Kurapia sample in a half barrel that we grew from a tiny little sprout over a few months’ time.

@Dennis Wichter it’s looking good πŸ‘πŸΌ 😊 I need to do another round of compost and castings (I’ve procrastinated, big surprise) but it’s really filling in nicely. It loves the heat and sun β˜€οΈ and this am I saw all kinds of mushrooms. Sorry about the shadows, I missed my no-shadow window both times I went out to take a pic.

@Dennis Wichter thanks, I think it’ll fill in when heat kicks in too. And you’re right about the mushrooms. I’ve seen a couple different varieties lately.

Hey, is this insect good or bad??? If bad, how do I get rid of it?

I’m not sure from the pic. There’s a great insect resource that identifies all sorts of bugs and tells you about them here: https://www.skool.com/grow-anything-with-living-soil-5314/know-before-you-smush?p=86968a7b
