What fields have you come from?
This industry seems to cast a wide net and gather people from drastically different backgrounds. I've worked with people who worked as professional chefs, truck drivers, engineers, diesel mechanics, and just about any of the trades I can think of. I'm curious where everyone here is coming from and what they've experienced in their careers before looking to nuclear. So what has your path looked like so far?

Today, I received my offer for the Brunswick Plant in South Port, NC. This will be my first outage as a Junior Decon. I plan to work this outage to get my foot in the door, take my tests this summer and doing my 2nd & 3rd outage this fall as a Junior RP. I manage to get my brother in as well so we will be doing outages together to cut cost.

Congrats man! I hope it all goes great for you! It's awesome to get family in with you, good on you and your brother. Hope our paths cross someday!
From Warehouses to Controls Tech
Hello Group! I'm new here, and would love to talk to people about the industry. Some info about me, I'm an I&C Tech at a plant in the Northeast, started here in 2025. Most of my previous experience was in warehousing, and it's been a wild change in environments. I'm really enjoying the field so far, and I'd enjoy talking to anyone interested about, or already in the industry! I'd love to help answer any questions, or just make some connections here, so let's talk!

Hi Michael! If it's not too personal, how does the road work effect your family life? I know, for me at least, working 6-12s during outages, it can be hard on my relationship. I'd love to hear how you and your family manage those hefty months of work. I love the idea of creating a massive group of centralized information about nuclear. It's so scattered right now, between Facebook groups, Reddit posts, and everything else. I can't wait to see this group grow over the next few years! You're right, it was a pretty drastic change in work, and it took some time. The plant I work at partners with a local community college to offer a Nuclear Energy Technology program. It's a two year class, and was taught by the plants in house training instructors. The classes were scheduled in the evening, so I was able to work full time while completing it. After the first year, the students were offered a paid summer internship at the plant, where I got to spend a couple months with Ops, RP, Elec, I&C, and Mech shops, and just get a feel of the work. It was a great time to learn, make connections and get my foot in the door. After I finished the program, I was offered a job in I&C, and I've been here since!

I could definitely see myself doing more traveling work as I get older, once that psychological barrier you talked about gets easier. Thanks for sharing your experience!
