Hey everyone, I have been working on improving my prose and I wanted to hear yalls feedback on the first 500 words of my novel. All advice is welcome. Ser Jon Chantlin walks through a thin layer of snow mixed with ash and dry blood. His boots turned the unholy mixture to mush under him. The sent of fire hangs in the air like sweet wine during a spring feast. With a steady eye on Tristane, the High Prince; he takes in the surrounding sight. None of the carnage is new to Jon; neither the sight nor smell of burnt corpses is a matter of disgust for him. Not anymore, at least. Just ahead of him, Prince Tristane stops in his tracks. Ser Jon might be used to this unholy work, but the King’s heir is not. “Bloody hells!” The High Prince says. Picking up his pace to catch up to Tristane, Ser Jon quickly discovers what the Prince is gaping at. Bloody hells! The sight is not exactly new, but Aester be damned if he ever got used to seeing a severed head. Not only the head, every damned limb on the man severed off but pushed back to their natural spots on the body. “Monsters,” Ser Jon whispered to himself. “Best not to look your Highness, we should return to your uncle.” Aester knows I don’t want to look either. “Why?” Tristane blurts out, nearly yelling. “Why would they cut him up and…put him back like this? It makes no sense.” As if sense has anything to do with killing. “I cannot say; I only know that battle turns men to beasts. Now we must return to camp.” Let the footmen deal with the cleanup. “Barbaric,” Tristane says as he shakes his and turns around to face Jon. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. He strides past Jon, back the way they came. Their men were already picking up the dead and loading them into wagons by the dozen. Another thing about killing, their no sense nor honor in it. And Aester knows you will not be honored after it. Stange how peaceful men live peaceful lives and are buried in peace. Men of war get no such comfort even in death. I suppose we don’t deserve it.
