Introducing: Mossy Manor
Submitted my first Fairy home to Annmarie Sculpture garden for their annual submission and thoroughly enjoyed the process of experimenting with new materials! Things I thought came out well: - horseshoe door (a technique I have done when leading workshops) with working knocker - working swing - popsicle stick interior flooring - tiled patio - painting expanding foam to look like rocks over the plywood base - the ladder coming out very clean with no visible glue thanks to being able to inset the rungs into holes - engraving swirls in stone, definitely something I will repeat - sculpting polymer mushrooms Things I didn't love the end result of or want to explore alternatives for: - covering the base structure in moss made the project a little more expensive and created a busier texture than I was hoping - adding more painted elements for bright spots of color, while I generally gravitate to a more neutral/natural palette I felt like this piece was a little flat in the end from a value perspective - the painted pond area I liked but am curious about adding epoxy in the future for depth/different texture finish - what to put behind stick window frame, here I had some depth and painted a candle glow color inside but wasn't happy with how it read

Thanks @Sandra Arsenault! Definitely an aspect I would carry into future ones 🥰

@Linda Park it was hard to stop! I did add a few more elements after this video including a second horseshoe door and some figures made of acorns/walnut shells/wire which brought some life into it. Looking forward to seeing others creations for more ideas of hiding small details 😊

This is a piece I started last year after becoming obsessed with dried vines curly tendrils. It's a combination of twigs, glue and paper wrapped wire to create structure (paper wrapped wire has been amazing for blending in). I am debating how much I want to fill in the form, with more curly twigs, brown wire to create structure in a repeated pattern, or dried flowers/lichen... is it nice being so airy or does it need more substance for the shape to read? It also does not have a home destination yet, so could live inside. Maybe with a potted plant and have something petite like Ceropegia growing on it? Welcoming any thoughts!

@Mary Bachmann here’s to continuing to play and see what sticks!
Scale
Just wondering what size we are working with for this project? I know it’s mini but can we get a scale for something please. I think my bench is too large. Thanks

My scale certainly changes depending on on my comfort level with the process - tiny can be charming and also frustrating 😅. Sometimes forcing myself to make a thing a little bigger to minimize headache is a better place to start for a first draft...
Help 🤷‍♀️
How does one manage to hold all the bits together while they glue things together?

A real struggle! Depending on what I am working on I have also sometimes has luck with using a pieces of wire to temporarily hold a connection point. For example in making a chair: - winding light gauge wire in a spiral around my stick leg with lots of excess on the end that is near glue side - drilling a divot into the receiving piece of material - wood (or faster drying super glue depending) glue in the connection point - pressing the two together and while holding at the correct angle using my wire end to wrap around the whole piece and create some tension to hold it in place Sometimes too I try to get myself to work on a few chairs at once so the first leg can be somewhat set before I come back to do the next part.
Newbie here!
Hi - I'm from a small town in central New York, USA. I caught the "mini bug" right before COVID shut the world down for 2 years, so I devoted my quiet time to learning the craft. I haven't jumped into fairy building yet, but an intrigued and gathering materials to make a lantern. Knowing me, I'll go completely off the deep end and fill my already overflowing craft room with sticks and bits of bark :) Thank you for letting me join!

@Mary Coddington can relate to the compulsion to hoard bark, sticks, seed pods, lichen and other magical bits and bobs from outside 🙃
