The long-term seems to be a product of your short term. Your long term helps to shape your short term by aligning those goals to reach your big one. As you accomplish those short term goals you receive clarity, like seeing past the blue atmospheric haze as you drive closer to something. Then you may find your long term goals changing to something else you originally thought, though being of greater value to you. So the very pursuit of chasing your goals is shaping your true desires. Or you could say completing your goals reveals your desires. Or pursuing your desire forms your desire. Say I want to be healthy. In that you might become a chef which you never really knew until you see a goal to eat healthy. Being healthy was vague and even long term, but it shaped your short term like build a healthy grocery list. Then you find you like cooking so now you got closer to your unique long term goal to be a chef. I kinda think we don't know what we really want until we seek it through action and experience. So try a lot of things!
