Such an interesting question. I’ve always been quite laid-back around food, especially raising SEN deep-feeler children. We started with baby-led weaning, and over time I’ve found that reducing control actually brings more calm around eating. Rather than focusing on what they can’t have, I just buy less of the things I don’t really want as regular options — if it’s not in the house, it doesn’t become a battle or a big focus. I make breakfast, lunch and dinner and usually give two choices so they still feel some autonomy. If they’re hungry between meals, they can come and ask — we keep it open and flexible rather than pressured.
