--------- ❤️ Don't forget to post what you have created today in the 𝗦𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗗𝗮𝘆 5 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 . ❤️ Really looking forward to seeing what you have created 😍 --------- Baudelaire said of Delacroix that he "had a passion for notes and sketches and made them wherever he was." In 1832 Delacroix travelled to Morocco and filled small notebooks with whatever was in front of him. Quick ink drawings, a wash of colour, and notes to himself squeezed into the gaps. A wall painted yellow. A dress in a very bright pink. Half a figure, three lines and done. None of it is finished. It was never meant to be. He was collecting. Years later he wrote: "I began to make something tolerable of my African journey only when I had forgotten the trivial details and remembered nothing but the striking and the poetic side of the subject. Up to that time, I had been haunted by this passion for accuracy that most people mistake for truth." 𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩'𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙝 𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝. 𝙂𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙩 𝙚𝙭𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙣𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙟𝙤𝙗. You can always add the details later. I find a quick sketch is like a crib note a reminder to fill in later when you have the time. It reminds me of the scene, the people, the landscape and, the smells so I can finish.

Sorry I'm late with this as we didn't get home til very late last night. But this is always a joy. Certain things from certain places always bring back the best memories.

She kept it through the last ten years of her life, much of that time in bed after the accident that shattered her spine. Some pages burst with colour and figures. Others are almost entirely handwriting, sprawling right across the paper. On one of them she sat testing her coloured pencils and wrote down what each one meant to her. Not the names, the meanings. Green, warm good light. Yellow, madness and sickness and fear, and also part of the sun and of joy. Blue, electricity and purity, and distance, and tenderness can be this blue too. She wasn't making any of it for us. She was putting down what was in her, on whatever page came next. And across the top of one spread, in her own handwriting, she titled it 𝘮𝘪 𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭. My real world. Your sketchbook is allowed to hold the words too. Some days that's the whole entry. 🖤 𝘗𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘍𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘢 𝘒𝘢𝘩𝘭𝘰, 𝘤.1944–1954. 𝘐𝘯𝘬, 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘳.

My wife and I travel to Mexico a lot and her art is all over the place where we visit in Playa del Carmen. It is very vibrant and so full of color.
