They might appear as a wise elder, a being of light, an animal, or something completely unexpected. There's no "right" way for this to go. And if you're worried you're making it up? That worry means you're probably not. People who are genuinely making things up don't question themselves like that. What If I Don't Get Their Name? That's completely okay. Some guides reveal their name over time. Some don't use names at all. What matters is the connection you're building, not checking boxes.
