What are your thoughts on watching movies/series to learn a language? (In addition to having conversations) And how should it be done? Also, any additional tips?
I might be doing it "the slow way", but I mix it up, letting my intuition guide, while mentally double-checking if I'm just being lazy. Sometimes I watch with L1 subtitles, sometimes with L2, sometimes without. I also find dual language subtitles to be helpful at times. The L2 subtitles help when I'm having trouble picking up the heavily "slurred" speech. L1 were very helpful when I had really weak retrieval of otherwise known words. I use them less and less the better my understanding and retreival speed gets. Warning: For L1 to help though, you have to intentionally (forcefully) keep heavy attention on the spoken language at the same time. This is pretty tough to maintain for a long time, and there is definitely opportunity for bad or non-literal translation to cause confusion. I will often watch the same thing a second time without subtitles too and I agree that if you're familiar with the plot, its probably the best way to approach it.
