Nobody Warms Up When The Tones Drop
Monday night, a 38 year old third string quarterback walked onto the field for the Chicago Bears. Case Keenum hadn't started a game in almost three years. He had retired once already. The starter got hurt. The backup got hurt. The job fell all the way down the depth chart to him. He beat the unbeaten Eagles and threw two touchdowns. When people asked how, he pointed to something he's said for years: "You don't have to get ready if you stay ready." Every firefighter understands that. We don't get to stretch when the tones drop at 3am. We don't get a week's notice before the worst call of our career. We stay ready for the job every single shift. But most of us don't do that for our health. We go hard for a while. Then overtime stacks up, sleep falls apart, the kids get busy, and training drops to zero. Then a few months later we "start over." Again. Here's the problem. Zero is the only dose that really costs you. Every year that road back gets longer. And the research says much of the muscle and fitness we blame on age actually comes from disuse. Our bodies don't expire at 40. They fade when we stop using them. Keenum didn't stay ready by training like a starter. He stayed ready on the minimum. Film, meetings, reps in his head. We can do the same thing. On a tough stretch, you don't need a full program. You need a maintenance dose: 1. Two Zone 2 sessions a week, 20 to 30 minutes at a pace where you can still talk. Easy enough to do on shift. 2. Two hard sets, twice a week, on the big patterns. A squat or hinge, a push, a pull. 3. Protect one sleep window. Same bedtime on your off nights, no matter what. That's it. Not progress. Just keeping the door open so you're not starting from the parking lot later. You don't have to get healthy if you stay healthy. Reply and tell me which one fell off first for you. Training, sleep, or food. Stay calibrated, John

Simple! Let’s go crew!
Yoga
On duty today, busy night last night, rallied the crew for an hour of Yin Yoga from a YouTube channel and we were left stoked and feeling better than we had. Definitely eye opening to say the least for all of us but it is going to be a new thing. Even the new guys who are still limber were on it and lining out next set. Challenge accepted! Wanted to pass it on to the group.. get your crews on board (hence John’s recent IG post) and let’s roll! It’s legit. Let us know how it goes on your end and let’s make it part of the day just like daily’s and dinner. Get em’

@Matthew Topping how’d it go with your crew Matt?
A new era of fitness in the fire service
A new era of fitness in the fire service starts with the people in this group. For decades, firefighters have been handed civilian fitness plans and told to make them work. Plans built for people who work 9 to 5, sleep 8 hours a night, and live the same day over and over. That's not our life. And that's why those plans don't get firefighters results. That's why you're here. In this club, we take your actual life into account. Your call volume. Your sleep deprivation. Your family life. Your age. Your injuries. And we remember something most programs forget. Fitness is only one piece of health. You don't just want to be fit. You want to be healthy. That takes a holistic approach: Regulating your nervous system so you're not stuck in survival mode. Personal development, because your mindset drives every decision you make. Getting bloodwork on a regular basis so you know what's going on inside. Eating to support your hormones and reduce inflammation. Making sleep a priority, even on a shift schedule. Training according to your recovery, not your ego. And being OK with not being perfect. Because it's not about one workout. It's not about one meal. It's not about one night of sleep. It's about a career of good decisions. It's about being there for your crew, your community, and most importantly, your family. Now here's what I need from you. Show up to the coaching calls. Bring your questions. Bring what's working and what isn't. Bring the lessons from the Rewired curriculum you want to go deeper on. I can't coach you if I don't know what you need help with. If you're in Overhaul, bring your plan to the call and let's adjust it together. That's what it's there for. If you're in the Club and you want me to build a personalized plan around your life, ask me about Overhaul on the next call or send me a DM. Drop a comment below and tell me: which piece of health are you working on most right now? Let's get to work. Stay calibrated, John

Down! John can you remind us when the coaching calls take place with the crew? And crew, let’s show up for the movement. I trust it’s going to go somewhere big if we stay tight 👊🏼
