Placing at the State Fair
Hi all. A few weeks ago I placed first in our county-wide talent contest which earned me the opportunity to compete in the state competition. Well, that started today (Fri., 8/28/28) at the NYS Fair. Today was the first of 5 preliminaries. There are 58 contestants in the MAXI division (ages 13 and up) and a bunch more in the MINI division (12 and under). Anyway, I had the privilege of being the very first act of the entire contest. If I do say so myself, it went great! I have to do the same routine as I did at the county fair and I had the same responses. The audience was eating it up and even the judges were laughing. One was laughing so hard she had to put her pen down to wipe her eyes. Anyway, I made the cut and I'm going to the Semi-finals next Friday. Same routine, hopefully the same results. I'll keep you posted. (BTW, the routine is posted in my profile.)

@William Matthews it sounds like you did the absolute best you could, and even got the response we all want from the audience. Talent contests are hard since the judging can be so subjective. Try not to be discouraged, and keep up the great work of entertaining audiences.

Kids Who Are Afraid of Your Puppets
Sometimes kids get afraid of the puppets. Whenever this happens, I always stop the show and demonstrate the puppet is a puppet. This puts the little ones at ease. And I also give them a tiny ventriloquist lesson too. Have any of you encountered this and how did you combat it?

I haven’t run into it during a performance, except for maybe an adult here and there. I HAVE had it happen while strolling. When this happens I usually keep a bit of distance and interact from a distance until they warm up. Sometimes you just have to move on though
Uses For Vent Outside of Performance
Vent is synonymous with nightclub acts and TV, but also children’s entertainment. Outside of performing, vent in my experiences has been used to teach children about safety, anti-bullying, to preach religious lessons and in therapy to help people of all ages. What are some ways you’ve seen vent used in a non-performance way?

Might still be considered performing, but I have made a few one on one children’s hospital visits through the years.
