Nalbinding (nålbinding) is an ancient, single-needle fabric technique predating knitting and crochet by thousands of years, with roots dating back to 6,000 BCE in Israel. Primarily used to create durable, non-raveling, and warm clothing—especially socks and mittens—it was common in Scandinavia during the Viking Age (8th–11th centuries) before being largely replaced by knitting. It is often called "single-needle knitting" or "Viking knitting" Technique: Unlike knitting, which uses two needles and creates interlocking loops that can unravel, nalbinding uses a single needle and short lengths of yarn to create a series of knots that do not unravel, even if cut.
