Running fully inclusive sessions - tips?
I'm curious to hear how many of you run sessions (remote and in-person) with a fully inclusive audience, eg including those with accessibility or inclusion requirements? What are your challenges and tips when creating and facilitating such sessions to ensure everyone can engage? Especially when tools such as Miro/Mural/Figjam etc are not very accessible, what are you turning too?

Thank you for the relevant question @Amy McInnes Different from neurodivergent challenges, but I am working more and more on bilingual challenges in teams that are transitioning from all Italians to only 2-3 foreigners in a group of up to 50 people and finding a lot of resistance to the English switch or even if they are friendly with the language we risk to lose useful insights because some don't have the vocabulary to express all they mean to say (for example, risking poorer ideation sessions or conflict resolution). Three questions that I am building for myself in my design phase are: which moments can be simplified even more than they are now? where can I design smaller groups as side-bars to the larger group where a second level of insights can come out more freely? is there a buddy system that can be put in place to team mates can help each other dig deeper away from official programming? Hope this helps. Also curious to know if anybody else here is experience something similar, would love to exchange more.

Thatโ€™s a great suggestion, thanks @Amy McInnes . Will give it a try and see how it goes. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป
Hello from Milan ๐Ÿ™๏ธ
Hi everyone ๐Ÿค ๐Ÿ‘‹! My name is Donatella, I have transitioned from a previous expat career as a Public Relations director in multinational companies to full time certified facilitator on the topic of community design, helping teams in organisations and citizens transform into communities that face change together. I am super excited to be there, AJ&Smart training and school when I first started were essential for getting a new profession out in the world, and do it with confidence and fun ๐Ÿ”ฅ. When this community was born it was like they read my mind! I am really excited to exchange practices, connect and collaborate together with you. I am convinced facilitating is what the world needs right now, and I am determined to not make it a solitary pursuit anymore. Looking forward !

@Rebecca Courtney Thank you Rebecca, it would be interesting to know more about how everyone describes what a facilitator is to the world. The role is so specific and yet so fluid, I find myself many times having to specify I am not a coach :-) ๐Ÿ˜€

@Rebecca Courtney Thank you Rebecca, love the non-directive leadership bit.
What are your thoughts on Virtual Facilitation?๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ
As more and more workshops and meetings are being held online, it's important to understand the unique challenges and opportunities that come with virtual facilitation. I have found that one of my best practices for virtual facilitation is to create a structured agenda and to stick to it. I also make sure to use interactive tools such as breakout rooms and polls to keep my audience engaged. Another tip that I follow is to actively monitor and manage group dynamics, as it can be more challenging to read the room when working remotely. From building engagement to managing distractions, how do you ensure your virtual workshops are productive and effective? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below and let's start a conversation about virtual facilitation best practices.

For online facilitation, depending on the purpose of the workshop in my experience is important to choose at the beginning if you want the format to be content + discussion (like zoom call + board for activities) or content + discussion + connection. I feel like the latter drives more impact and I learned one of the transformational ways to make virtual facilitation feel more connected is to involve human touch like "the body" especially at the beginning to make it as relational as possible. An example of this is to create a container to invite the guests to become present as much as the facilitator with human signs for example: - Invitation: make it loud and clear that this is an invitation to be present and available - "If that sounds good, wiggle your finger" - "Take a moment to notice everybody in the room" - "Take a moment to focus on a couple of people here" - Start workshop activity Most of the time, it's surprising to notice how digital synchronicity can happen too when you create room for it (for example: the people you noticed at the beginning of the session, are the ones you end up in the break out room with), that "magic" keeps people believing and engaged.
Facilitation notes ๐Ÿ““
Dear Facilitators, let me start from the end. I feel like one of my favorite moments in facilitating a workshop especially with large groups is the "harvest" one, when the room is empty again, it's a mess now and you sit down to do a retrospective on what happened to collect all the data to continue design better next times. I was curious to learn from you what tools/methods or other do you find useful in building a journal of your experience, for you as a professional or for the client?
