START HERE: Welcome to Room to Record
Room to Record is for musicians and creators who have the gear, the ideas and the intention, but still aren't making enough. You might be working from: • a full home studio • a desk in the corner of a room • a laptop and headphones • a rehearsal room • or complete organised creative chaos The goal isn’t a perfect studio. It’s having a workable space, a clearer process and enough momentum to keep making things. Sometimes you don’t need more gear or another tutorial. You need an outside perspective, help working out what’s missing, and a clear next step. That’s what we’ll work on here. We’ll talk about: • rooms and studio setups • recording and songwriting • workflow and creative friction • gear without endlessly buying more of it • unfinished projects • decisions and next steps • releasing and sharing your work • useful tools, services and opportunities • and the strange business of trying to make meaningful things while still living a normal adult life Share your setup, your music, your current project, a problem you’re stuck on, or just quietly absorb ideas while pretending you’re “still planning things.” Very common here. What are you trying to make, finish or move forward right now?

Just released a single and expect it to become part of my second full length album. My setup is modest but doesn't hold me back. I have a smallish room but it is dedicated to music and is treated enough that it sounds good for both tracking vocals and mixing. Macbook Pro + Logic Pro with a SSL 2 MKII audio interface Very old Blue Sky monitors with a subwoofer Beyerdynamic open back headphones Have a couple of nice microphones for vocal recording including a Roswell Delphos II Midi drums (I have a Yamaha edrum kit) Nektar midi keyboard I do everything else in the box including guitar amps and bass

One reason I really like the SSL MKII audio interface is because it has physical knobs and buttons for every function. I previously had an Apogee Duet, but it has a single knob that you would press to make it select different functions. Worked perfectly fine except that I would forget to push it into the right mode, so when I wanted to turn down the monitor level, I would accidentally change the mic gain. Repeat until you want to scream!

Less planning. More making. I’ve spent a ridiculous amount of time thinking about creative spaces, recording workflows and getting projects finished. Now it’s time to actually put it all into practice. I’m getting back into recording my own songs, starting with some unfinished material, and I’ll be documenting the process here. The mistakes, the decisions, the equipment, the distractions and hopefully the finished recordings. Today I started to go through the unfinished demos for the second album. This is a song called “Jump the Fence” which started as a basic idea about 15 years ago. I began creating a demo and developing the sound about 3 years ago. Armed with a brand new bass preamp I put down some basic bass lines and will be returning to the song over the next few days along with many others. Yes - you will get to hear it! What’s one creative project you’ve been meaning to finish?

Just released a single that I had been meaning to finish for what seems like *forever*! This one feels really good to let go. I came up with the main riff wayyyyy back in 2019 but was never able to figure out where to go with it. I tried three or four different ideas over the years but everything seemed too lame to pursue. Finally, this summer I took one more shot and came up with a chorus that I felt did justice to the verses. The bridge came pretty quickly after that and then it was just a matter of getting the performances, mix, and vocals right. You can check it out here: https://chasingseptembermusic.com/againandagain/
The FIRST Album on vinyl…
I seem to regularly forget that of the 10 tracks on this album, 6 were recorded at home - in my own studio space. I used a bunch of tricks along the way to combat creative friction, ADHD and general resistance - but it was done and released in January 2026. And next month I’ll be properly starting in the next one (I guess I already have), or at least intensifying the process. Check this one out on streaming services - ask questions!

Nice collection! More country in there than I was expecting from an Australian artist :-) I'm wondering if you could share some of the tricks you used to combat "creative friction, ADHD, and general resistance"? Like you, I released an album last winter (Dec 31, 2025 because I promised myself I would get it done before the end of the calendar year!!!) I'm now working on my second album but it has been slow going. I have a single coming out in October but getting to a full 10 songs is going to require some magic.
