Y Combinator (a massive startup incubator who helped launch Airbnb, Dropbox & many others) won't even invest in a company or offer mentorship to anyone who doesn't have a co-founder. It's not worth their time because of the high failure rate of solo founders. So that's step 1: Decide if you're going to be behind the scenes or if you're going to be the face. Whichever position you choose, find someone to take care of the other role. As Ted has talked about, the Dream 100 list is perhaps the single most important factor to speed up your success. Leveraging someone else's influence and audience can be a great way to build up your own credibility.
