You are right where you need to be ๐
Yo! ๐คSo there is so much focus on techniques and the more mechanical side of music creation as artists, producers and songwriters. Which is great! How much of the music you make and listen to benefits from this is probably humanly impossible to calculate. But how much of our day is spent in the softer, more reflective inner world? Are we giving ourselves the self narratives to be kind and gentle on ourselves while not putting our self worth on the sliding scale of how well we can can make music, especially compared to other people. This hugely affects our outside choices like learning techniques. Are you learning them to really improve your music, or is there an element of filling a significance hole inside you? ๐Maybe that's not necessarily something that's wrong. But are you going in the best direction for you, and if not, is your self narrative drifting you off course? I can struggle with this for sure. It's understandable. At school we were conditioned with sets and grades and in society, where is the narrative around encouraging creativity, making mistakes and focusing on where we are on the path, not the universally cheered outcome? ๐One thing that has really helped me over the years, in music and Life is Joseph Campbells' Heroes Jouney. For those not familiar with it, Campbell studied religions, civilisations and the human subconcious and discovered there are universal stages in our lives that are documented in all of them. He put these together in The Heroes Journey, which a lot of film and stories use as a framework. These stages either contain more resistance or more freedom. It's a journey each one of us goes through in tiny ways every day, all the way up to our whole life being a full cycle. I have started to enjoy looking at these stages as tension and release. And just like a Slingshot, how much tension you can create directly affects the amount of release you get. โ๏ธMaybe instead of belittling yourself today, comparing yourself in a powerless manner or talking low of yourself for not being where you 'should' be, you can play around with the idea you're exactly where you need to be with all the tools you need for the next step of your journey.
