This group is GROWING 🌱 A warm welcome + introduction!
Wow - the group has grown to over 120 members in just 30 days! I'd like to welcome everyone who has joined in these past few weeks 🤗 Say hi below and tell us where you're from! I'm Christine and I LOVE SEWING! Some things you should know about me: - I never learned to sew as a child and thought sewing was LAME when I was a teenager even though my mom made tailored clothing and ball gowns. - I started sewing at the ripe ol' age of 27, and all I knew was what a bobbin is and that you have something called a seam-allowance. - I never attended a single sewing class...because they just didn't exist in my tiny town! - I spent MANY years fumbling my way through hundreds of patterns, tutorial videos and fabric that ended up in the bin... Of course I became obsessed with sewing, so I quit teaching Shakespeare to the rugby team and started teaching sewing! I knew there were other women who needed a different way of learning... Not the polished, highly edited style of YouTube influencers and pattern 'rat race' in the online sewing world. Real-time sewing classes that felt like a coffee and sewing date, and got you straight to sewing your first project. If you're new to sewing or trying to get back into it, I want to encourage you not to feel intimidated by all the content out there! Sewing is actually not that terrifying once you start, and you can't compare your beginner self with people who have been sewing since they were 9 years old. I don't believe beginners should be limited by 'beginner projects'. What you really need is just good instruction! The best thing you can do for your sewing THIS WEEKEND? Get your machine out, get it threaded and jump into your first project! You'll find all of that right here in this group → the Sewing 101 course is the exact course I teach to absolute newbies. And if you have a different project lined up? Feel free to ask a question in the community! This group has all skill levels in it and so many enthusiastic women ready to help with their experienced advice!

Welcome you all at 74 I am just learning, trying to remember to back stich at beginning and end of seams lol
My next thing!
I’m chuffed with this. Another massive old curtain (£2), with a heavy, slightly plasticky-feeling lining - perfect for my sewing machine’s jacket! It’s ‘roomy’ and not perfect - and I still need to work out how on earth to make a little flap in the top for the handle - but I’m chuffed with it nonetheless 😊

October : Beginner's Course Walk Through
I've been chatting to some of our newer members and it sounds like going through the Sewing 101 Course together will be very helpful for many in the group. Doing things together instantly makes it more motivating and less overwhelming! ➡️ I'll work through it with you over 2 weeks, with small, easy tasks to complete weekly. ➡️We'll be sewing a beginner project that can help you practice using your machine. Who's in? 💭 Let me know and I'll start setting it up 👇

How to add a picture to a post 📸
Skool is new to many of us! I've had a bunch of questions about adding a photo to a post. Here's how to do it: 1. Start writing a post in the community 2. Click on the little paperclip / attachment icon (bottom left) 3. Select ATTACH FILE 4. Now you can choose photos to add from your phone Can't wait to see all your projects 🤩

Do sewing machine needles really matter?
If you’re new to sewing, you might not even realize there are different kinds of needles. But yes - the needle you use makes a big difference in how your fabric sews. 👩‍🏫 Why it matters - The wrong needle can cause skipped stitches, broken thread, or even holes in your fabric. - A worn-out needle can make your sewing look messy, even if you’re doing everything right. 🧵 The basics you need to know as a beginner: There are two main fabric types: → Woven / non-stretchy fabrics (like cotton and denim) → Use a Universal needle. → Stretchy fabrics (like t-shirts and leggings) → Use a Jersey/Stretch needle. That’s it! You don’t need to know all the others yet, this is a good enough start! 💡 Beginner tip if you're not sure what to choose: - Start with Universal size 90 for cottons. - Start with Jersey size 80 for stretchy clothes. - If your stitches skip, your fabric snags, or your thread keeps breaking → it’s usually the needle, so swap it out. How often to change the needle? Just like a knife or pair of scissors, a needle will dull with use. Most 'experts' recommend changing every 8 hours of sewing... BUT, most of us aren't keeping track of our sewing in that way 🙃 So a good alternative to this: ✅ Change when you change fabric types (new fabric = new needle) ✅ Change it if you experience issues like skipped stitches, bunching of thread or thread breaking 👉 I’ve made a video lesson that shows you the different types of needles up close, and there’s also a printable download to guide you. >>>Both are waiting for you HERE inside the classroom<<<
