Let's gather 100 accidents/mistakes that have happened during our facilitation
Hello facilitators around the world! 🌏 I have no doubt we learn from doing. What if we build a mistake ladder by reflecting the learnings (especially the stupid ones) from our experiences so that we can learn from each other! I will go first with this simple format -> accidents / mistakes (format of facilitation : in-person/virtual/hybrid) - Workshop participants being locked in the toilet during the break (In-person) - Forgot to set timer for breakout room (virtual) - Online participants felt left out from discussions in the room (hybrid) Feel free to add yours below!!🙌

@Shirley Lam - yeah Shirley, it was definitely a strange one. Basically this guy was new and wanted to posture with his experience and how he could help, and so jumped right in. I was definitely raging inside, but calmly managed to reiterate the purpose, instructed my scribes to capture some takeaways that we could possibly follow up, after the session. I also had to remind everyone that the session was being recorded, and to be careful of commitments being made in/or out of contracted terms. The power of facilitation is that you are always in control and managing the process. Time is your friend (even though it doesn’t always feel that way) in a time-boxed session. As the conversations stray, or take a deep dives, you always bring it back up to a happy path and state that the detailed nature or complexity of something is not likely to be resolved in this session, and so recommend separate sessions to discuss further with the right people to help move it forward.

If you happen to use Mentimeter during any of your sessions, as a way of collecting attendee thoughts or voting on something, then be sure to disable the “allow profanity” box. I had a big session of 100 people, and because their was issues with the presentation screens and microphones, (which were nothing to do with me), I bore the brunt of the abuse, which contained profanity. Which now looking back upon it, some of these people should have been held accountable.
What are your top tips for setting yourself up as a freelance workshopper?
One of the great things about what we do is you can do it as an employee or go out and become your own company. Whilst the later comes with amazing benefits there are a lot of areas that need to be considers… Like - What does it take to set myself up as a business or do I just contract in. - If I am setting myself up as a business am I a sole trader.. registering by business - Defining your purpose and setting clear goals yearly, quarterly - Defining your target customers, products, services and financials. Whilst this is a passion space for a lot of us, you still need to understand your revenue needs. - Branding and marketing - What do you need to set yourself up… physically, technology - Contracts for engagements - How to build a pipeline, managing you customer base Making sure you get work life balance! Would be interested in hearing and learning from each other on what made sense for you and what you would like to share with the rest of the community…

If you have the time and resources Caroline, you can use the Reiss Motivation Profile (RMP), that will help to illustrate the values of each individual and what motivates them and what happens when each basic desire is not being met. It’s possible that they have more similarities that they’d care to admit, but the differences are what is causing the friction. Given that you’ll not be able to change them, you need to find a way of getting them to realise that each individual has a different need that needs to be fulfilled, but equally they need to find a way of working together, so that they at least compliment each other. If not, then you experience the ‘everyday tyranny’ that’s currently happening. Funnily enough, I’m a Certified RMP Master, and could allow them to take the RMP Test, if that would help?

Many thanks Henri, I’m in.
Wahey! Look what arrived today.
I was initially inclined to say don’t send the physical copy, as I was happy with the pdf version, and wanted to reduce my carbon footprint. The chocolates were a nice touch too, and if my wife asks, you DID send them.😉🤣

Oh no, sorry Eugenia, I didn’t mean to annoy anyone. I’m sure yours will arrive soon. I’m in London, so not too far from Berlin. Not sure where you are, but it will be well worth the wait, when it arrives.🤗
