Sync Licensing Question
Hey guys, I got an email saying it is from Spirit Music Group and a song of mine has been selected for a Netflix feature film. I first felt it was a scam however I submitted a brief questionaire which didn't ask any questions I felt could be used to scam me. Tonight I received a contract which looks legit however under one section titled "Administration Fee" it states "to secure and facilitate the guaranteed placement the artist agrees to pay a one-time, upfront, fully refundable administration fee". Is this a common practice? Unfortunately the Spirit Music Group website has no contact submission or I would ask them directly. Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this.

@Neil Speers thanks for joining this discussion. The URL was from a .com and they were very crafty. I have been in touch with Spirit Music Group and they are aware of this spam and are in the legal process of getting it shut down.

@Mark Toby they were very original in the approach. It was supposedly for a Netflix feature film (The Whisper Man...legit) starring some big names which is currently in production and quoting a nice sync fee over $38K which is not an unreasonable fee for a film of this stature. Spirit Music Group is already aware of this scam and is working to get it closed down...if it hasn't been already. I have heard nothing more from the scammers.

A Mastering Question
Hey all, I am stumped and figured this would be a good place to ask. Working on a mix I finished the other day and trying my hand at mastering. My problem is that while aiming for -14 LUFS, any time I adjust the threshold on my limiter to tame the peaks I quickly go from my target LUFS to -12. Also, is it a best practice to bounce the mix before mastering? I had good results a few days ago just mastering from the master track in my DAW on a different track...perhaps just lucky? Thanks in advance for any help. ๐

@Barry Wire thanks for joining the discussion. I know the guys at FTM talk a lot about RMS. It gets rather confusing when reading about LUFS levels for streaming and what can happen when something is too hot and the streaming service turns it down. Some say it doesn't matter...some say the codecs (if that is correct) can actually mess up the mix by introducing artifacts.

@Reetesh Ranjan thanks for the link. Interesting reading. In a perfect world everyone would agree on all this!!! LOL I think that is what makes mixing/mastering so much fun. For most of it there are many ways to arrive at the same place and it tends to appeal to our artistic natures to have options.

Thanks for the tracks and the informative 3 day FTM with Warren...great stuff!!! Could anyone tell me what BPM the practice tracks for The Catalyst is? I do not use Pro Tools so the included PTX file which I assume has the BPM info does me no good. Thanks in advance!!!
