The Dark Side Of āGood Vibes Onlyā
Ever met someone whoās so positive you want to throw a wet flannel at them? You know the type ā permanent grin, spiritual quote every ten minutes, āeverything happens for a reasonā stitched on their tote bag. They radiate sunshine so hard it gives you sunburn. Now donāt get me wrong ā Iām a big fan of optimism. Iāve built my career encouraging people to aim higher, dream bigger, and actually do something about it. But thereās a big difference between positive thinking and toxic positivity. Toxic positivity is that āfake-it-till-you-break-itā attitude where people pretend everythingās perfect, even when their lifeās going sideways faster than a shopping trolley with a dodgy wheel. Itās the belief that if you just āthink happy thoughts,ā youāll manifest your way out of debt, heartbreak, or bad decisions. Spoiler alert: you wonāt. Real growth, real success ā heck, even real happiness ā comes from being honest about where youāre at. Itās messy, itās uncomfortable, and sometimes itās ugly. But itās real. And thatās where the magic happens. I once knew a guy ā letās call him Paul ā who was the poster boy for āgood vibes only.ā Heād show up to networking events with that glazed, blissful smile that said, āIām fine, everythingās fine.ā But Paul had ideas. Big ones. Business plans, books, projects that couldāve made a real impact. Yet he never acted on any of them. Every time someone challenged him, heād shrug and say, āIām happy as I am. I donāt need success to prove myself.ā Which sounded wise⦠until you realised it was just fear in a fancy disguise. When things didnāt work out ā surprise, surprise ā heād blame the ānegativityā of others for holding him back. āPeople donāt understand positive energy,ā heād say, while sitting in the same coffee shop, year after year, still talking about the dream he never started. Thatās the trap. Toxic positivity becomes a cushion for inaction. It lets people hide behind smiles instead of facing the grind. It whispers, āYouāre fine where you are,ā when deep down, you know youāve got more in you.
