Welcome to Living Soil with Cherene!
I created this community to make worm composting, living soil, and healthier plant systems feel less overwhelming and more organized! Check out the classroom tab for a self paced learning system and utilize this community for learning and connecting! Instead of digging through endless comments and videos, I wanted one place where people could: -learn step by step -ask questions -connect with others -grow healthier plants from the soil up Feel free to introduce yourself in the comments! Tell us: - where you’re from - what worms you have (or want) - whether you’re brand new or experienced - what you’re hoping to learn I’ll keep building this space over time with videos, resources, discussions, and live support. If you’re new to worm composting or living soil, welcome! You’re in the right place! :)

@Jim Flach Welcome to the Group !! Are your worms indoors or out ? Are you new to Vermi Composting, or been at it for awhile? I am sure you will enjoy this friendly and helpful group.
Resiliency!!!
Do you think our little squirmy friends are resilient? They have no brain, no skeleton, no lungs, no face not even a centralized heart. They can't possibly be very resilient can they? Contraire Mon Fre're, the lil guys in the pics(few you can see) left San Antonio Tx on Sept 29th, made it to Shertz Tx that same day and started a sight seeing journey towards Memphis Tn over the next 5 days. Decided they liked Tennessee so well they spent 4 days slooooowwwly making their way to Knoxville Tennessee where they liked it so much they spent 8 days(must have caught a Vols football game) before finally arriving to their new home in Pineville, Ky. Its quite possible they have become some of the most well traveled and culturally diverse worms in the country. With all that said I didn't find 1 single dead worm and they weren't really skinny looking. If thats not resilient I dont know what is. I don't think I could pack enough stuff in my truck to travel as much as they have for thus amount of time and not be starved and strung out. Thanks a bunch @Cherene Packard they made it!!!!

I wish I got to travel as much as this bin you have shown here, and the one of Patrick's on "Vermicomposting Learn By Doing". His has been to 3 different Countries, all but a few of your National Parks, and on Planes, Trains and Automobiles ! LOL Me? I went into town for groceries. 😁
Left my pre compost alone for awhile
I was struggling trying to get my first attempt at pre compost to a high temperature and never got over 105. I did two heat cycle attempts and I left it alone for a few weeks and checked it today. At first glance I am definitely growing something in the tote. Not sure what all of it is but it is interesting. Temperature is at 80 degrees. There is no smell that my 84 year old nose can detect so I guess that is a good sign. Any views on whether this is good enough to start adding some worms to it after I locate some of it in a smaller bin? I still haven’t pulled the plug on ordering some worms but I’m getting close

@Raymond Barr That looks as if it is doing very well ! When I have that white fungi growing on the surface I mix it into the precompost to assist in more growing throughout. I have never had a problem with any of my batches. Please Keep us informed.
Babies bin and breeder bin check in
The babies bin I am happy with but the breeder bin the ants are a bother and the lack of cacoons

You may find there are a lot of cocoons in those clumps in the breeder bin ! They seem to always have some !
Dividends from the squirmies' hard work!!!
Harvested a 14 inch section from Big Ben today. The bedding was only 6 inches deep. I started my dry down process last Thursday. I use a small 4 inch fan that blows across the top and work the bedding 3-5 times a day(3 on work days, 5 weekends). The result is over 90% of the worms vacate, the bedding reaches a moisture level of around 65% and I can hand sift around 5 gallons of castings in about 20 mins. Now I only need 30 more gallons of castings to fill my 4x8 bed. Big Ben and his squirmy crew are paying huge dividends!!! Pics are the before and after with a lil over 4 gallons of 1/8 sifted castings 😁💩🪱😁

@Jason Evans That is something new to me. For planting veggies or Aromatics ☺️ indoors or out ?

@Jason Evans I have got to stop reading things in these groups !! Just googled "Grassroots living soil beds" And see I could mix that with "Hugelkultur" for a wild idea I had for my planting here. Thought of using 3 3' X 9' X 2' steel raised beds in a U shaped garden screened in for my veggies. I had given up on outdoor gardening due to 24 hr. marauders in the form of deer, racoons, groundhogs, squirrels and chipmunks that have invaded my gardens in the past !
