The Gear I Miss (or Don’t Miss!)
Is there a piece of gear you actually miss? Or one you never want to see again? Actually, I miss the BDUs. I used to like wearing them with the hat because they had so many pockets and were very comfortable. I got rid of them a long time ago because I have moved so many times and they didn't seem absolutely necessary at the time. I regret getting rid of them now, of course. But they might not fit me anymore. I'm not fat, but I was very small when I was in the service 40 years ago!!!! How about you?

@John Pogue Yes I love the Stryke pants too. They're awesome. Unfortunately where I live, if you wear them, people instantly pick you out as Special Forces, which I definitely am not, so I don't tend to wear them very much.

@John Pogue yep that sounds familiar. We laugh at the SF guys because they like to keep their work identity a secret. Once you see the beard, the baseball cap with a tight curve, Stryker’s and a pair of Merrells, they stick out.
Mental Fitness Check-In
How do you stay mentally strong these days? Share something that helps you (routine, therapy, fitness, etc.). I have so many responsibilities these days that it is hard to find time to let it all go. But I have to or I'd go crazy. I walk my dog in the mornings and evenings. The evening walks are what I use to let go of my day. It relaxes me. If I miss a walk, I really feel it. So I try to make it non-negotiable. How about you?

I follow Andrew Huberman’s policy quite strongly. The nine pillars of mental and physical health have saved me so many times I can’t try to count. A Structured sleep routine, getting a minimum of 10 minutes sunlight before 10 am and some sort of movement are definitely non-negotiable. The remaining 6 are deliberate lifestyle choices I’ve made. Yes I agree @Chantal Cain Missing a walk really sucks. You feel the missing dopamine hit. I bet your dog dislikes missing walks as well.

@Becky Rapp I’m glad you saved it. I share this with members of my community and people in my workplace to help them stay accountable. I have seen such a massive difference in the people that get after the 10 steps every day. It’s a game changer. I hope you get to commit to the steps as well
From Combat Boots to Sneakers
How did your relationship with fitness, routine, or health change after the military? When I went into the service, I hadn't done much exercise in my life before that. In basic, it took me the whole 2 months to be able to run miles without stopping. But over time got better. I still barely made the time I needed to pass the test, but I did it. After I got out of the service, I decided that I wanted to exercise every day for the rest of my life. It is the best way to start each day. It makes me feel better all day. I will never stop! How about you?

I’m with you @Chantal Cain if I don’t start the day with a workout, it’s a fail. I feel so terrible by the afternoon window of circadian low. Also like you, I didn’t do any exercise prior to the military. I’d be so fat and useless if I didn’t join up. Thanks for the awesome question
The Legacy I Want to Leave
What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind—for your family, your fellow veterans, or your community? I want my children and grand children to understand that I proudly served for our country. I hope that someday one of my family members joins the service like I did. It was a great experience and has given me great benefits for buying houses and having medical care forever. What about you?

To be known as providing a valuable contribution to the military, right up until the day I left. There are some that become a bit institutionalised and can't leave. I don't want to be known as that guy.
My Military Role in One Sentence
Describe your job or role in the military in a single sentence (serious or humorous welcome). My MOS was 26V Strategic Microwave Systems Repairer. I had rotating shifts each month to take care of the communication equipment. It had to be guarded and/or maintained 24 hours a day 7 days a week. During the night time shifts we played Pinochle to stay awake. LOL I don't remember how to play though. How about you?

If I’m not flying in the back of a Hercules, I am ensuring the aviation safety management system for the Air Force is top-notch. Sounds pretty full on. It’s actually incredibly boring, when my office is normally the cargo compartment of a C-130 Hercules.

@Chantal Cain Agreed. There is a pretty big purpose to what we do isn’t there.
