Week 2 English Challenge 🔥
This week, we’re doing a shadowing challenge using President Trump’s AI-generated video (yes, he posted that 🤣). I added both English and Portuguese subtitles to make it easier to follow along. You’ll also find the script attached below. Feel free to print it or write the lines down on a piece of paper before you start recording. Your challenge: ✅ Record all of Trump’s lines throughout the video. ✅ Then, choose ONE patient (Patient 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6) and record all of that patient’s lines as well. Your goal is to imitate the speaker as closely as possible. Pay attention to: - Pronunciation - Intonation - Rhythm - Emotion Before you record, listen to my example audio so you know exactly what I’m looking for. I personally chose Patient 3. When you’re finished, upload your recording here, and I’ll personally give you feedback on your pronunciation, intonation, rhythm, and overall delivery. I’m excited to hear your recordings! 🇺🇸🎙️

The Pledge of Allegiance: Shadowing
Jerry, one of our community members, recorded this video teaching the Pledge of Allegiance, and I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to introduce you to one of the most effective pronunciation techniques out there: shadowing. So, what is shadowing? Shadowing is when you listen to a native speaker and imitate them as closely as possible. You’re not just repeating the words. You’re copying their pronunciation, rhythm, intonation, connected speech, and even the way they pause and emphasize certain words. Here’s how I’d like you to do this challenge: 1. Watch Jerry’s video once all the way through. 2. Then watch it again, pausing after each sentence. 3. Repeat exactly what he says, trying to imitate his pronunciation, rhythm, and intonation as closely as possible. 4. Once you feel more comfortable, try saying longer sections without pausing or even the entire video from memory! I’ve also included the transcript below to make the exercise easier. Feel free to read along at first, but little by little, challenge yourself to rely less on the text and more on your listening. When you’re done, come back and let me know in the comments: - Was it easier or harder than you expected? - Which sentence was the most challenging? - Did you notice any sounds or words that were difficult to imitate? I can’t wait to hear how it goes. Happy shadowing! 🇺🇸🎧

@Jerry Crumley thank you for your contribution! I grew up watching American movies (that's quite common here in Brazil), and one thing I’ve always admired about American culture is the sense of patriotism. A question: is reciting the Pledge of Allegiance still common in schools, or does it not happen as frequently as it used to? When I was younger, here in Brazil, we used to line up in the schoolyard and sing the national anthem. Unfortunately, that has completely faded away nowadays."

@Jerry Crumley Here in Brazil, leftism has basically destroyed any sense of patriotism. The left is rooted in all institutions, culture, entertainment, etc. Antonio Gramsci was very successful here, unfortunately.

New coming!
Hello everyone! Good evening! Nice to join this community. I hope I can learn a lot from all of you. And @Mackenzie Marino my huge tks for the opportunity! I'm originally from Manaus, but now I live in Florianópolis, I moved from the north to the south of Brazil! Today, I'm as a Project Manager at a microelectronics company, but my graduation is Computer Science. I'm also a proud father of two amazing kids: Luciano Filho, who is 24, and Lucca Heitor, who is 14. Looking forward to getting to know everyone and sharing experiences! Have good week all.

Welcome Luciano! You’ve done what I’m planning to do: move to the South of Brazil. I currently live in Santos (São Paulo), but I have the desire to move down South and, eventually, to the USA. I have to admit, I’m quite tired of the lack of manners and civility here, and people say that people there are more polite. What have you noticed in that regard since you moved there? Are people actually more polite? Did you face any kind of prejudice from the locals for being from another state, especially coming from the North? (People talk a lot about that, but I tend to think it’s nonsense).

@Luciano Paes Thanks for your reply! That’s exactly what I imagined. After doing some research, I found a few cities that really interested me, especially Gramado, in Rio Grande do Sul. I know it’s an expensive city, but from what I’ve looked up, it’s not much different from where I live now (sometimes even cheaper), and it offers WAY more safety and civility. However, for a few reasons, moving is still a bit of a distant goal for me. But it’s not impossible. Let’s see what the future holds. Best regards and thanks a lot!
