@Grant Richardson Wish I could say that it's amazing, but been way to busy with work to make it out as much as I'd like. Got out with the dog last weekend to find some grouse. She flushed 4, ended up bagging one (not with the bow, though). How has your season been so far?

@Grant Richardson Thanks a bunch!!! That is a good tip. I have been working on some of those things, like sitting by the door before going out, before getting food. Been also working a bit on heeling. She's catching on, but definitely still very much has a mind of her own. I've been meaning to start incorporating a whistle. Thanks for the book info as well! Cheers!

@Rocky Zeien Thank you. I am hoping to do a good job training her. It will be my first.
Bow’s Tuned, Broadheads Are Sharp–It’s Elk Camp Time Again
Hey everyone, That time of year has rolled around again—our annual elk hunting trip out on Alberta crown land is just about here—we leave Friday morning—and the excitement’s been building for weeks. I’ve been hitting the range regularly, dialling in my compound bow, and making sure the broadheads are razor sharp. I’ve packed my go-to elk calls—can’t head in without my favourite diaphragm calls and trusty bugle tube. With any luck (and a bit of wind in our favour), we’ll get into some action. We’ll be setting up camp by the river again—same spot we’ve returned to for years now. It’s got no cell service, no distractions, and an endless supply of river rocks, which my three kids take very seriously. Their rock collection efforts are relentless, and every “perfect” one gets proudly presented to me—usually while I’m trying to cook a meal. Honestly, it’s one of the best parts of the trip. As much as we’re out there for elk, there’s a lot more going on. We’ll spend some days hunting grouse and rabbit too—I'll be bringing along my reflex/deflex for that. It’s a great way to involve the kids and get them learning about ethical hunting, patience, and the responsibility that comes with pursuing game. We talk a lot about respect—for the animals, the land, and the process. No shortcuts, no egos—just doing it right and appreciating every part of it. And of course, I’ll be out there with my dad, husband, and a few old buddies—guys I’ve shared a campfire and a lot of missed shots with over the years. The jokes haven’t changed, but somehow they keep getting funnier. Wishing everyone a safe, respectful, and memorable season. May your arrows fly true and your coolers fill up—whether it’s with meat or just stories worth retelling.

@Kelsey Holts Hey, sorry for the late reply. I've been doing great. Staying busy and hopefully out of trouble. Too bad you didn't get one this time, but there is always tomorrow!! What's the plan for the rest of the hunting season? Any more trips planned?
Nocking points
Would your nocking points.. too high or too low.. would that affect your arrow flight.. ?? Would that also give you a weak spine or something else?

I actually dealt with that issue fairly recently. I simply could not tune any arrow to my bow. Any arrow spine I tried was showing weak, or tail left out of my right hand bow. I even went all the way down to 300 spine, which for a 50# bow makes absolutely no sense. After much tinkering I figured out that my nocking point was just ever so slightly too low that it threw the arrow tail left. It took me a bit to catch it, because it made no noise and the arrow didn't really fishtail in flight. I would suggest to set it slightly high and work from there. Sorry for the long winded answer, this was just something that was driving me mad for a while

@Grant Richardson Hahaha, I certainly am!!! I am doing great, my friend, thank you! Been keeping busy with house renos since we moved here, so that has affected my presence in the woods. Lol However, I did join the Alberta Traditional Bowhunters Association, and it has been great hanging out, learning from and shooting with like minded people...really a great bunch of archers and characters! Glad to see that you are doing great in your endeavor to build this community and everything else that goes with it. As a matter of fact I am re-reading your book to try and soak up some more of the info and knowledge from it. Luckily for me I am a slow learner, so it probably won't be the last time either🤪!
