Creation is Crucial
Creation. Our ability to look at nothingness and bring something into existence. Thoughts and feeling molded and manifested into existence. Into actions and tangible items. What has amazed me looking back directly over the last six months but also through the somatic work I have been doing and analyzing the last 40 years is how the ability to create is in and of itself a tool. The tool is neither inherently good or bad. For those that desire to create things of beauty and life they drive towards that. For those that create without thought they allow others to determine the merit of their creation. Lastly there are those that create for the purpose of destruction. I was thinking of the film Oppenheimer the other day and how one of the most devastating weapons in the existence of mankind was created. It was a concept of challenging and pushing ourselves without understanding whether or not that creation would carry the merit it was intended for. It was created without thought of purpose. The question of can we do it superceded how it would be used. In time that question would be answered with other creatives. Inasmuch as some used their creative powers to mold that idea into death and destruction others would take the same concepts and create the means to battle cancer, power cities and travel to space. Our ability for the creative is seemingly limitless, a beautiful aspect of the personhood of God within us. However, when we create without consideration of the purpose it opens the door to some destructive possibilities. Thinking now in the moment on creation what I love is the ether of thought. Anyone who has ever sat in meditation will know this a little more clearly but it happens to us all. In the shower, on the treadmill, in the sauna our thoughts emerge from the ether. Where and why our minds pulls us towards ideas and concepts is seemingly evasive and yet each us in our own experience and wisdom are constantly driven towards the creation of something new. What I have been loving is using this practically. Some would see hour long walks, hour long meditations and purposeful silence as doing nothing. In reality it is prepping the forge. One of the stories I love is the tale of Michelangelo and the marble. This story may have not happened and may be more fable then fact but the fable bears repeating. Michelangelo was well known for his artistic prowess. One of his timeless pieces is the statue of David. There is a tale that when he was presented with the massive 18-ft block of marble he spent months simply looking at it. Gazing into it. Contemplating its potential. The tale goes that a prince visited to see the Maestro working and was baffled to see the man sitting and staring endlessly. When he inquired of Michelangelo what he was doing the artists response was “Sto lavorando”

Emotional Breakthroughs
Woke this morning at 4:30am and was rested. The feeling is a bit of an oddity as my body for over decade had become accustomed to 3-4 hours of restless sleep plagued by nightmares of the worst kind. Nightly relieving the traumas of the past. Each morning was a genuine battle to just pull myself from bed and move. No longer. I wake and am excited to start my days to pursue what lies ahead. Schedule, goals, routine all are blessings that just call out to me. I don’t start super fast mind you like some. But I start. I read, pray or seek inspiration. This morning it was inspiration. As I opened a reel that caught my eyes of a young girl who had cancer and was living out of a car with her family. Instantly I could feel the tears welling up inside me, and then… a moment of epiphany. My gut reaction after 41 years of life when my body’s response to the feeling of tears is to hold them back and bottle them up. Not to let them flow freely. In that moment I audibly had to speak it out loud, ITS OKAY TO CRY. For some this may sound insane, for others I am sure you could empathize all too well that the permission to cry is something that has to be given. To realize how many tears I have held back, pulled back, walled off. Every dam breaks. The more surprising thing for me is now that those tears have started to flow the valve isnt turning off, they continue to flow. Its been an hour and a half now and my body continues to weep. Its not a wailing outpouring but a constant drip of tears rolling down my cheeks and I am committed to one thing and one thing only, let them run. There is nobody here but me, there is nowhere to be. No work that must be done in this moment, no face that must be put on for work or those around me to numb my pain for their comfort. Instead their is a place of permission to just let it happen. To simply be what it will be. And right now its leaking. That’s not to say I am sitting here in sadness, this is not me hurting in this moment. There is no recurring pain that is being wrestled with. The permission that I have given though seems to have simply opened the flood gates and I am committed to letting the reservoir drain out entirely. The amazing thing is as the tears drain I can feel my heart lighten. The weight lifting and when I say weight I mean real physical weight coming off my shoulders, I mean heavy stones chained to my heart being shattered. If freedom were a symbol it should be this the rolling of a tear from eye to cheek.
