I completed my Nutrition Certification from Food Matters!
Some of my biggest takeaways… -Adding resistant starches to our diets can lower blood sugar and increase insulin sensitivity without any other changes to diet. Resistant starches include green bananas, cassava, cannellini beans. -the herb Withania is really good for supporting thyroid issues, and good sleep, along with a bunch of other benefits. Withania is also called Ashwagandha. - if someone is struggling with anxiety, a good first step would be to add Omega 3 fatty acids and magnesium. Sometimes those things alone can improve the situation dramatically. Omega 3 is in things like flax seeds, walnuts, wild fish I learned sooo much more, but these are some of my biggest takeaways. Excited to be a certified Nutrition Coach, rather than a certified Nutrition Nerd, which I’ve been for decades! I’m currently listening to the Nutrition Coaching module, which goes deeper into building a business centered around nutrition. Thank you @Laurentine Tenbosch for creating such an amazing program!! If you’re reading this, I encourage you to create your own Wins! post, about something you’re proud of, so we can all celebrate you!

Congrats @Vasi Smith !!! There are ample studies that reveal refrigerating starchy foods (e.g. rice, potatoes, pasta, breads) after cooking and before eating them can affect their cellular structure to convert them into resistant starches too. I buy sourdough bread from my local grocery story bakery (made in-house) and immediately freeze it in 4-slice groups when I get it home from the store. Then I take it out 4 slices at a time -- upon thawing, they are fresh as the day I bought them and have a lower glycemic impact. Similarly, I'll make a whole batch of wheat or protein pasta and then put it in the fridge to have as healthy carbs (with added fiber) with meals for the week.
What do you think of Creatine?
I’ve never taken it, but I keep hearing about how amazing it is for sleep support, brain clarity, muscle growth, etc. Curious what fellow Thrivers think about this supplement? I remember @Jenn Lukesh mentioning that she’s taking it in coffee? Unless I made that up. Vote in the poll and share more in comments below.

@Vasi Smith the weight gain or variability is limited, based on the amount of muscle mass in your body … so it peaks after consistent daily doses that saturate your creatine + water storage capacity. It’s just good to understand that your set point may need to change when starting on it … and that your weight will vary with your daily creatine consistency.

@Kate Galli, physics suggests something else at play here. A normal diet is insufficient to fill lean tissue creatine storage capacity, so a lack of weight gain with regular creatine supplementation would suggest either: it’s not being absorbed, it’s being offset by losses elsewhere, insufficient hydration accompanying supplementation, or a combination of these factors, no?

If so, invite them to this talk! Just copy and paste the description below :) Charles has the most mindful and effective approach to using weight loss drugs that I’ve ever come across. He’s learned how to use them as a tool for his transformation without being overly reliant on them. The effects were immediate, both in appetite and on the scale. In this masterclass, Charles will share the systems perspective emerging from his experience, and the insights he gained along the way that reinforce metabolic infrastructure. We’ll explore how common weight-loss approaches can either support or undermine long-term vitality, depending on how they’re implemented. It took Charles more than a year to recognize that a weekly injection alone would not build, and might even erode, the metabolic resilience necessary to sustain the weight loss and support the enduring vitality he sought.

@Alex McMillan, I too am sorry for her and anyone suffering such side effects. @Vasi Smith, I’m not on the lowest dose. I stopped increasing my after the second step up (ie the mid-point for Terzepitide/Mounjaro). So keeping to the lowest dosage that provides desired weight loss and / or glucose management results. The literature and popular media reports agree that more, and higher intensity side effects are more common with doses above the midpoint (that’s true for Semiglutide/Ozempic too). I also chose to go with Mounjaro because it was shown to have significantly fewer cases of adverse reactions compared to Ozempic. I’ve heard from multiple people that successfully moved to Mounjaro after bad experiences with Ozempic, but those are anecdotal .. I haven’t seen that in the literature. As with most pharmaceuticals, there is a small, but significant percentage of people who just don’t tolerate a medication well — that’s true for these drugs too. Though there are other common aggravating possibilities too … such as ramping up the dosage too fast. As mention above, ramping higher than necessary for results. Also there can be interactions with other medications or supplements. Insufficient and inconsistent hydration can also cause issues. And even the diet (both content and timing of various content) can have a significant effect. Ultimately, I advise anyone working closely with their trusted physician and a GLP-1knowledgeable consulting dietitian, being very clear about any other supplements and drugs used (recreational or pharmaceutical) as well as discussing dietary reality (what’s being eaten and when).

I'll share a joyful movement observation I experienced Sunday ... I've worked several months on building toward seven full days of intentional movement, i.e. 45-60+ minutes of daily exercise beyond movement required for my daily living). I've achieved that goal for the last two weeks. While that accomplishment is joyous on its own, a realization (and decision) during my Peloton ride yesterday took it over the top. My Peloton rides are usually 45 minutes of super high intensity, not-so-aerobic, effort (HR Zone 4 level). But doing 7 days of movement requires a couple days of lighter activity. So Sunday I chose to keep a more leisurely approach and moderated my output to keep it aerobic (HR Zone 2 only). I intended to stack two classes for 50 minutes total, but mistakenly stacked two 30-minute classes and only noticed it after getting well into the second class -- whoops! Oh well, I continued forward to the end when the realization hit. I could go on for another hour at this pace ... and then the decision. It's my 'rest' day, an hour is more than enough ... What a joy it was to realize how far my fitness has come ... and to experience the empowerment of that choice, to finish there or to continue on because either option would be easy, and neither would cause any regret.

Thanks @Vasi Smith for inviting me to share via this masterclass. I will be targeting insights that I hope are useful for others no matter their weight-release / weight-management modality, while also touching on key elements of my GLP-1 agonist therapy experience. I'll be happy to stick around and answer questions about that experience that aren't addressed by my planned presentation, and can keep the conversation going here in the Thrive! community too if questions come up later. For context ... I started on Mounjaro (terzepatide) in August of 2023 and have lost over 140 lbs since then. While my results may not be typical, I feel what I've learned during that process to maximize my results can benefit others seeking similar sustainable weight-loss and long-term vitality, whether using GLP-1 drugs or other approaches. I look forward to the conversation!
