Heads up - likely need to push today’s coaching call later.
Still on the road coming back from Santa Cruz. If there’s a place I can stop at 10 or 12 and do today’s call, I will but may need to push to 3 pm today!

Happy Friday the 13th all!
A real nerdy share - notice anything?
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023) is one of my favorite recent releases. Every time I watch it, I am amazed at how much story it tells and how fast it moves. So, my brain being what it is... one day, I sat down and mapped the movie out, beat-by-beat, minute-by-minute. Here are the results. This movie is, essentially, a series of short stories/adventures with a beginning, middle, and end, over and over until we reach the end credits. It is astounding to me how well paced and structured this thing is. So, if you're writing and you feel stuck - maybe give your characters a task to achieve (or fail)? Write your scene with a beginning, middle, and end, rather than what we typically do and ssssttttrrrreeeettttcccchhhh a scene out for way too long with nothing actually being done.

Wow great work here, Nick. Thank you for this insight!
Great coaching sessions today and yesterday!
Thanks to all who showed up and are putting in the work to truly level up. I’m on my way to UC Santa Cruz to take my son on a college tour. Will post the sessions tonight! Meanwhile, what are your goals for the rest of the week?

Actor or director?
Here's something that's been on my mind: I recently saw MARTY SUPREME, and whether you like him or not, Timothee Chalamet is an extraordinary actor. If you haven't seen it, it's directed by Josh Safdi who directed UNCUT GEMS. I also recently watched an episode of SOMEBODY FEED PHIL where a friend of his tells a story of how he was once on set watching a taping of EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND and how they did a scene, then right after, Phil (Rosenthal, creator & director of ELR) went individually to each actor and gave them his notes. They went again and the scene was so much better. So my question is, who's more important: actor or director?

@Donovan Manuel love your take on this question. And it makes a lot of sense breaking it down to creative (director) and emotion (actor). Strength in both aspects will ideally land you a great film. Wondering: what examples are out there that had both, but DID NOT deliver on the final cut? 🤔

@Donovan Manuel wow thanks for these examples. I totally agree with your a Star Wars Prequels pick. Didn't see the others tho
Friday's Coaching Session (Feb 6) What are your take aways?
Huge turnout today! This was our biggest yet. Every one of these is a learning experience for me. Especially seeing how the pages play out now that we're doing table reads and seeing how other writers respond. Curious what came out of today for you guys. @Temycka Carpenter Carlton @Jason Byrley @Jason Smith @Chad Desrochers @Anna Fermin @Pia Crawford @Shauna G @Iii Party @Krystel Biasotti @Chris Dyer @Ian Campbell @Lena Lieuvin @Piter Marek @David Hinnebusch @Godfrey Virgile We couldn't get to everyone and will get you in future sessions. Meanwhile, I need to create a sign up sheet of sorts here, so we can schedule more than one session out. But this platform doesn't allow me to do that, so any suggestions on how to do so would be appreciated!

As always, whether you're in the hot seat or on the sidelines, I always walk away from these calls with more knowledge and inspiration for my own writing Was impressed and excited with the projects on this call. And the live table reads along with the instant feed back, invaluable. Looking forward to the next one!

@David Stem As far as organizing table reads, maybe start with a couple rules: 1. first come first serve on the post - first three who drop pages get the table reads. 2. But you cannot have two table reads in a row. So if you get read on a Monday you can't get read on Tuesday as well. Unless of course there are only three people who drop pages for that day. Starting to seem less likely as the group grows. This way might motivate folks to drop pages sooner than later? It's a start anyway
