Sorry for being quiet…
Just a quick message to apologise for being slightly quieter on here… if you didn’t know, we are currently in the process of packing up our life into 2 suitcases and moving to the other side of the world! (Scotland to Malaysia). We have sold our home so it is all a bit mad, as well as we are on a cruise from New York NEXT WEEK!! So trying to get organised for this too.😂 as well as daily life/work/family commitments. It is very busy/chaotic, but I know all the stress will be worth it! We are embarking on Odyessy of the seas from New York. It is a 15 night transatlantic cruise.🤩🛳️ We will be posting updates in here whilst onboard and answering any of your questions.

No worries, thanks for the update. As a nomad, I am no stranger to the stress of moving regularly. Good luck on your move and enjoy your cruises.
Embarkation day, how do you actually do yours?
We have done 36+ cruises now and our embarkation day routine has completely changed! We used to get the earliest boarding slot, do our muster drill, go and explore the ship, grab some cocktails and find a good spot for sail away. Now, we actually head onboard pretty late! So I am curious, how does YOUR embarkation day actually go? Do you try to board as early as possible or do you hang back and arrive later? What is the first thing you do once you’re on board? Do you explore the ship straight away or head for food first? After the safety drill, pool deck, bar, cabin, or something else? Do you have any embarkation day traditions or rituals? There is no right answer here.😂 Drop yours below, I want to hear how you lot do it.

I went for early on the group cruise. We had an invitation to the MDR for lunch on embarkation day and I didn't want to miss that. I do see both reasons as viable. Since it's best to get to the port city the day before, early often works best. I'm not a big freak about where I'm at on Sail away.

@Katrina Edginton I had heard it was generally available but most people just run to the buffet and never check any of the other venues. This cruise we were in a group of about 80. The coordinator got an email the day before that we were invited to the MDR. I thought SCORE I was planning on going there anyway. We were able to get our cruise bling from the coordinator in the MDR so it worked out very well, as well as meeting members of our group.
You don’t always need an excursion…
In a few weeks, we are boarding Odyssey of the Seas for a 15-night transatlantic crossing from New York to Barcelona. Five straight sea days to start. Then we hit Ponta Delgada, Lisbon, Seville, Gibraltar, Malaga, Cartagena, Palma, and finish in Barcelona.🇪🇸 For some of these ports, we have no plans. Lisbon, Gibraltar, Palma, Malaga… we are just going to walk off the ship and explore ourselves (we have done some research on places for us to go and see etc). After 36 cruises, one of the biggest things we have learned is that not every port day needs an excursion. I am not saying don’t plan anything ever. Seville, Ponta Delgada and Cartagena? We have got excursions booked for those places. We will be sharing the whole journey as we go, so you will get to see what we find. But here is what I want to know from you: Have you been to any of these ports? And you think we are crazy just going for a walk rather than booking something?😅👇

I've never cruised those ports. In general I'm fine with a walking tour or a taxi tour vs an authorized excursion.

@Katrina Edginton thank goodness she doesn't have to wait for the city to clear her. A private company like Rccl will have it done in no time.
Where are you going for breakfast…
I posted a video on my socials yesterday around how we tend to avoid the buffet on cruise ships at breakfast as they can be pretty crazy…😅🍽️ It is getting a debate going so I would love to know where you guys prefer too!👇

I often do both. Have a continental tray sent to the room, with a carton of milk fairly early. Set aside a donut or something for a snack later in the day. Then go to the MDR for eggs benedict and bacon a little later.
You Get ONE Upgrade. What Are You Choosing?
I am curious to know what you guys pick if you could ONLY choose one.😅👇 Or, is there something below you always get, and it is a non negotiable when it comes to your cruises? Let me know in the comments. 😊🛳️

I picked specialty dining. LIke others, I NEVER pay for any of this. Many years ago I somehow ended up in a mini suite. It was nice, but since then I am methodical in picking a cabin location that I think will be the best. Random upgrades, or even bidding takes my choice of location out of the equation. So it could be an amazing space but have all kinds of noise issues or other problems. Like @Brent Young I would probably pick internet if I could only have one freebie. Second would be dining though I am perfectly content in the MDR, specialty would be a new experience.
