Parents Consultation in EMDR with kids
Something I’ve been thinking about lately…Over the years, parent consultation has become one of my favorite parts of EMDR with kids. When I first started, I think I looked at it as the time to get updates, answer questions, and give parents a few ideas to try at home. Now I see it differently!! I see it as an important part of the child’s EMDR therapy. I only get a small window into a child’s week. Their parents and caregivers are with them through everything else. So if I’m helping the child build resources, but I’m not also supporting the people who are walking alongside them every day, I feel like I’m missing a really important opportunity. For me, parent consultation has become so much more than giving advice. 💙 It’s helping parents notice what they’re already doing well. It’s helping them understand their child’s nervous system a little differently. It’s giving them support that actually feels doable. I’ve also found myself thinking a lot about the parents. So many of them come in carrying fear, guilt, exhaustion, or wondering if they’re somehow failing their child. I never want to forget how vulnerable that is. They’re trusting us with the person they love most. I don’t think parent consultation is separate from EMDR. I think it’s one of the ways we help create the conditions where the child’s healing can continue between sessions. I’d ♥️ to hear how you think about parent consultation. Has your perspective changed over time?

I have found this to be the heart and soul of all of my work with kids. Parents are the primary agent of change. I have seen so many families transformed throught teaching parents about brain development, the role of parents in helping build bridges from the emotional to logical brain, and helping them see the importance of meeting their child in emotional regulation before trying to give instruction or steps (logical). I am SO new to EMDR with kids so I am excited to learn more about how this same principle applies to helping children process and heal their hurting places.
