ISBN for Broad Distribution
I'm about to purchase my ISBNs for my relaunch so that I have my own imprint. I'm wanting to use broad distribution through KDP and Ingramspark. Now, I'm having a little confusion. Will the ISBN I purchase from Bowker (Bowker labels it as US) work for this broad distribution to the UK? Will Amazon and Ingram handle the broad distribution issues if the Bowker ISBN is literally only for the US, or do I have to purchase the Bowker US ISBNs plus the Nielsen ISBNs? I can't afford to spend almost 300.00 on ISBNs and not get it right when I have the other expenses of publishing with which I must contend.

@S H You’re thinking about this the right way by securing your own ISBNs for the relaunch. Assuming your publishing entity/imprint is US-based, a Bowker-issued ISBN is generally not restricted to US sales, so you would not normally need to purchase Nielsen ISBNs simply to distribute the same edition in the UK. That said, I’d verify the current requirements with Bowker and your distribution platforms before purchasing, because ISBN and distribution rules can change. I’d also pay close attention to how you structure KDP and IngramSpark so you don’t create avoidable distribution or metadata conflicts. What does your planned distribution model look like right now, and which formats are you planning to release? That would help determine the cleanest setup before you invest in the ISBN block.
You don't need to be ready. You need to start.
I bluffed my way into my first magazine commission. I said yes before I knew if I could deliver. My first published work makes me cringe when I read it now. But it was published. And every piece after it was a little better. I'm assuming you are here because you have a book in you. What's one small step you could take towards your book this week?

@Jen Hatmaker Marketing!
What's the biggest thing stopping you from publishing your book?
When I first started my digital journey, I thought I needed everything to be perfect before taking the next step. That mindset kept me stuck for longer than I'd like to admit. What changed for me was getting the right guidance, focusing on one step at a time, and staying consistent instead of chasing perfection. I'd love to hear from this community: What's the biggest challenge you're facing with your self-publishing journey right now? Writing, editing, formatting, marketing, confidence, or something else? Drop it below, let's help each other move forward

@Tameko Cunningham I’m a professional book formatting, publishing, and marketing specialist with expertise in Amazon KDP and IngramSpark. I help authors turn manuscripts into polished, publication-ready books while improving their presentation, discoverability, and market positioning across print and eBook formats. Have you already published it, or are you still preparing your manuscript for publication? And beyond simply getting the book published, what are you hoping to achieve with it in terms of reaching readers and building long-term visibility?

@S H So far, have you found Amazon or B&N to be more effective for getting your books discovered? Or what strategies have you tried to help your books reach the right readers?

@S H I completely understand, and honestly, you’re not alone, many indie authors face the same challenge. The truth is, simply publishing on Amazon or B&N doesn’t guarantee visibility or sales. You’re already making a real effort with schools, libraries, word of mouth, Instagram, and your website. I think the main issue may be that you need a more focused strategy to turn those efforts into reader engagement, followers, and eventually sales. I’d be happy to look at what you’re currently doing and share a few ideas that could help simplify and strengthen your approach.
