THP9: Pen, keyboard, papyrus...
As a student I did everything by hand. The only people who possessed computers back in the 1980s were geeks who needed a haircut. Their screens flickered black, with green cursors. I had zero interest. So I did my entire university degree with a pen, and of course my writing muscles – both physical and metaphorical – were well toned. When I first came across screens I found the transition awkward, feeling the screen imposed a distance. . My sister who is a professional screenwriter still does her first drafts by hand – essentially using her laptop as a typewriter for the final draft only. But for me any sense of awkwardness of distance has now disappeared. I write easily on screen, be it a laptop or a phone, just as I read easily onscreen. A few years ago I had to write out longhand a long text for a French bank loan, and it hurt like hell. I did revive a journaling habit with a lovely fountain pen, last year. Have you all made the transition?

I was thinking about this today, as I was a student at the very end of the analogue age and the students of today use IT a lot more. I often find that my professional writing takes place on a screen, while my personal writing happens on paper. I have some Moleskine notebooks and a few Pukka Pads, and use a Uni-ball like the philistine I am.
THP5: What do you write?
When I look at all the stuff I write today, between my social media posts, my novel, my book on business writing, and here in Skool, it's clear I am writing more than ever. It's partly because I've decided to take it seriously and try to make a living out of it, but partly also because writing, and noticing stuff to write about, is like a muscle. And the more you practise the easier it gets. What are YOU writing at the moment? Is it personal or work/related, or both?

I am exploring a framework based on time orientation, and I write pieces on this every week or so. I sometimes write about things that inspire me. I also write to reminisce and wonder. I enjoy it.
