3 Mistakes New Controllers Make
1. Trying to memorize everything instead of building situational awareness. Strong controllers aren’t just repeating procedures, they’re learning to see the whole picture develop. 2. Letting one bad training session wreck confidence. Everyone has rough sessions. Growth happens when you learn, reset, and show up sharper the next day. 3. Waiting too long to ask questions. The best trainees I’ve seen weren’t afraid to ask why, seek clarification, and use instructors or mentors early. One thing I’ve learned: Skill develops through repetition. Confidence develops through experience. Judgment develops through mentorship. What mistake do you think new controllers make most often?

Why I Started Controller Edge
I created this community to help aspiring and current air traffic controllers grow through mentorship, shared experience, and practical career guidance. As a retired Navy Chief and current DoD Air Traffic Controller. Throughout my 20+ year career I’ve seen how much faster people grow when they have access to mentorship and a strong community. Whether you’re exploring ATC, pursuing the FAA or DoD route, or sharpening your skills, my hope is this becomes a place where we help each other succeed. My goal isn’t to make this just another online group, it’s to build a real professional community around growth, mentorship, and opportunity in air traffic control. If you have questions, experiences to share, or topics you’d like covered, post them. Let’s build this together!
