The good news? You don’t need to drop a paycheck on studio gear to look like you actually know what you’re doing. Here are 5 simple, budget-friendly ways to step up your lighting game: 1️⃣ Face the window. Your best (and free) light source is the sun. Just don’t sit with it behind you unless you want to look like a witness in a crime documentary. 2️⃣ Bounce it. If the light feels too harsh, grab a white poster board or even a piece of foam core. Acts as an instant light diffuser. 3️⃣ Add a lamp (strategically). Take that sad desk lamp in the corner and aim it toward your face at an angle. Warm bulbs beat the β€œI live in a basement” look. (Fun fact, sometimes I borrow my son's Super Mario lamp from his room) 4️⃣ Get rid of overhead shadows. Overhead lighting makes everyone look like they’re telling ghost stories. Kill it with a lamp or ring light at eye level. 5️⃣ Consistency is key. Mixing daylight and five different lamp shades makes you look like a patchwork quilt. Pick one type of light and stick with it. You don’t need much to look good on camera. A little creativity, a few tweaks, and you're good to go.

Here’s something most people overlook when it comes to video: visuals alone don’t maximize β€œmemorable”. Visual + Sound does. Research shows background music can double ad recall. That means viewers are way more likely to remember your brand when they hear something that fits the vibe. Sometimes, big brands even let the music do the influencing. They’ll use a familiar song as the β€œinfluencer” instead of a person. Have you heard the music in the current β€œBetter in Denim” GAP commercial? It catches my attention even when I’m not looking at the TV. (Might even want a milkshake πŸ˜‰) When you add music to your video, you’re not just filling space. You’re creating emotion, setting the pace, and giving people something to connect with. Pair that with strong visuals, and you’ve got a message that sticks long after the scroll. So as you’re creating, don’t just ask β€œwhat does this look like?” πŸ‘‰πŸ½ Ask: β€œwhat does this sound like?” Because video isn’t just seen, it’s felt.

Ever hit record and suddenly your brain goes blank? It’s not just you. It happens to almost everyone. A teleprompter can help. Not to make you sound like a robot, but to calm the nerves and keep your message tight. You can load a full script or just a few bullet points. Either way, it keeps you from rambling or forgetting that one key thing you meant to say. And if you want to keep it super basic, you can even pull up a doc with bullet points or speaking notes right on your screen to reference. Here are a few teleprompters I recommend if you want to try that route: πŸ‘‰πŸ½ BIGVU – Works on mobile or in your browser. Free version gives you recording with scrolling text with a watermark. Paid removes the watermark and adds editing, captions, branding, and even AI tools. πŸ‘‰πŸ½ Cueprompter.com – 100% free, browser-based, super simple. Just paste your script and hit play. πŸ‘‰πŸ½ TeleprompterMirror.com – Free browser version with speed and font adjustments. If you want extras like remote control, there’s a paid upgrade. You don’t need fancy gear to feel confident on camera. A teleprompter can take the pressure off and let you focus on connecting with your audience.

I use the Elgato Teleprompter for basic stuff and a higher end one for course work. Game changer.
