What is your back story? How did you get into ventriloquism?
For me, I was 13. My stepdad was a magician. He took me and my brothers to his friends house. They were showing us their magic and I clocked 2 figures. Animal from the Muppets and a Pelham ventriloquist figure. I started playing with them and my Stepdads friend said I was a natural and gifted me the Pelham, who I named Willy. For years, I did it in secret because boys didn't play with dolls. Then at 16, I was at college and had to do a 5 min talk on any subject. I did a 15 min show and it went down a storm. Unfortunately Willy was stolen from me and when I replaced him, I found Oliver. But I'd lost my confidence. One of my children needed glasses but didn't want to wear them, so Oliver needed glasses. As soon as he put them on, something changed. I haven't stopped venting since. Oh and my lovely wife, she managed to find another Willy so he's back in my collection and I performed at Venthaven with him in 2022.

I was living at the Ronald McDonald House while my baby brother was in the hospital a kid told me their Gizmo doll didn’t like me and only talked to them, so I got upset and made my teddy bear talk to everyone out loud except them. After my brother died at age 3 I got puppets and started doing shows for kids who lost loved ones at grief camp. I saw my first ventriloquist probably 5 years later and was like oh cool other people do this too.
Brain Farts
I have an extremely hard time remembering scripts even though I read them over and over, listen to them over and over, and practice them over and over. So was wanting to see if anyone has any tips, tricks, (or even cheats) on this matter?

If I have custom jokes or names to remember I write them on a card by my water and I go take a drink between characters before the bit I need them.

What Kind of Figures Do You Prefer?
I personally prefer soft mouth puppets because they are lighter and more suited to my smaller size. (I am 5’3.5 inches tall and sometimes a wooden figure is too big for me). What do you prefer, soft mouth or wood? Let the group know.

Axtell are my favorites but I wish I had the rights to use them on TV without getting permission
