False, I've had fish for years. Goldfish may have a short term memory of 3 seconds, but I know my goldfish recognized me and they couldn't do that if they only had a 3 second memory. I have heard that's what the experts say, but my experience is quite different. I think the world record for a goldfish living is like 39 years.

@Stephen B. Henry I read in a book they originally came from carp and grass carp in North America and they were take back to Japan and fed a protein rich diet which caused them to develop all the different colors.
