3 Recruiting Tips for HS QBs
1. Stop waiting to get discovered - start creating your own exposure. A lot of quarterbacks think a coach is just going to magically find them. That’s not how recruiting works anymore. You need to be sending film, going to camps where the right schools are, and building relationships with coaches. The quarterbacks who get recruited are the ones who are proactive about their exposure. 2. Your film matters more than your stats. College coaches don’t care if you threw for 4,000 yards against weak competition. They want to see how you move, how fast you process, your mechanics, your decision-making, and how you respond under pressure. A clean 3–4 minute highlight tape that shows command of the offense is way more powerful than a stat sheet. 3. Coaches recruit leaders, not just arms. Every quarterback at the college level can throw. What separates recruits is leadership, confidence, and composure. How do your teammates respond to you? Do you command the huddle? Do you bounce back after a bad play? That stuff shows up on film, and it matters way more than people think.

5 Biggest Recruiting Mistakes QBs Make
5 Biggest Recruiting Mistakes Quarterbacks Make These are the most common reasons talented QBs never get recruited. A lot of players think recruiting is just about talent, but it's really about visibility, strategy, and timing. 1. Waiting for Coaches to Find Them One of the biggest myths in recruiting is that coaches will just “discover you.” Reality: College coaches recruit thousands of players every year. If you aren’t reaching out, there’s a good chance they’ll never see your film. Fix it: - Email 50–200 college programs - Send your highlight film - Follow up every 3–4 weeks Recruiting is not passive — it’s proactive. 2. Bad Highlight Film Your highlight tape is your first impression. Most QBs make these mistakes: - The film is too long (8–10 minutes) - The best plays aren’t at the beginning - Too many runs instead of throws - No play indicators Coaches want to see decision-making and arm talent immediately. Fix it: - Keep film 3–4 minutes - Put your 5 best throws first - Show deep, intermediate, and pressure throws - Add arrows or circles before the snap A coach usually decides in 20 seconds if you’re worth recruiting. 3. Only Targeting Big D1 Schools Many QBs only email Power 5 schools. That’s a mistake. There are 700+ college football programs across: - D1 FBS - D1 FCS - D2 - D3 - NAIA - JUCO Many great players start at smaller schools and transfer up later. Fix it: Target schools that match your: - Size - Film level - Athletic ability - Academic profile Recruiting is about fit, not ego. 4. Ignoring Academics Grades matter more than most athletes realize. If a QB has: - Low GPA - Bad test scores - Eligibility issues Coaches often won’t recruit them, no matter how good they are. Why? Because every recruit is a risk for a coaching staff. Fix it: - Keep GPA 3.0+ if possible - Take academics seriously - Send transcripts when emailing coaches Good students are easier recruits. 5. Starting Recruiting Too Late
