Do you really know whats happening with Childcare?
Let’s talk about what’s really happening in childcare—no fluff. This season is hard. Not “busy hard,” not “we’ll bounce back next quarter” hard—but structurally hard. Childcare is being asked to operate like a business while being funded like a charity and regulated like a hospital. The math is not mathing. Costs are up across the board—wages, food, insurance, rent, supplies, compliance—yet tuition can’t rise at the same pace without pricing families out. Subsidy programs are inconsistent, delayed, reduced, or cut entirely, while expectations on providers continue to increase. We’re told childcare is essential, but it’s not treated as such from a funding perspective. Many centers aren’t closing because they failed. They’re closing because they stayed too long trying to do the right thing for families, staff, and children—while absorbing pressure from every side. From the parent perspective, families are also stretched. They’re paying more, earning less margin, juggling work demands, and often don’t realize how thin the line is between “open” and “closed” for the places caring for their children. There’s a disconnect—not from lack of care, but from lack of transparency and shared understanding. So here’s the real question:How do we connect as a community—owners, leaders, parents—to strengthen what’s left instead of silently struggling alone? This isn’t about blame. It’s about reality. It’s about naming the need. It’s about building smarter, stronger systems together. If you’re here, you’re likely feeling it too.Let’s talk. What are you seeing? What’s hardest right now? What do families need to understand? And how do we move forward—together? This season is tough. But isolation won’t fix it.Connection just might. Dr. MommyC
